Help Change Someone’s Future…Become an Adult Literacy Tutor Today!
Laura needs your help. She faces many obstacles every day, including language barriers. Laura was referred to Literacy DuPage through another human service agency because she desires to improve her English skills to help her children in school and to be able to understand and speak to doctors.
You can help changes Laura’s future by using your language skills to help her learn to read, write, speak and understand English better. In just a couple of hours a week, you can help open doors and provide a better future for her and her family.
Imagine not being able to read a food label, fill out a job application, or read to your child. Literacy DuPage provides tutor training for volunteers who want to help their neighbors achieve independence as adults face these situations every day.
“Where they meet for one-to-one tutoring is completely up to the individuals,” explains Paula Ledbetter Sellergren, a board member of Literacy DuPage. “Whatever is best for them and most convenient to both the tutor and the adult learner,” she says. “Most of the meetings take place in the local library and it is always at a time convenient for both as well.”
Tutors may be employed full-time, be retirees or homemakers. No experience, teaching background or second language is required, just a willingness to help a neighbor. Tutors will receive a comprehensive training in a series of 6 workshops preparing them for one-to-one tutoring. Once matched with an adult learner, Literacy DuPage staff will provide ongoing support.
The need for volunteers is ongoing, with 250 adults currently waiting for a tutor. You can help end the wait and make a difference in Laura’s life and others who are waiting.
