DG Patch Poll: Will you be Upset if Omega Doesn't Re-Open?

An institution in Downers Grove for 37 years, the future of Omega is uncertain.

The future of Omega Restaurant is unknown. Closed last week for failure to pay its water bill, the Downers Grove staple has sat closed since.

The owner has plans to re-open, but disputes with the village over water bills and a lawsuit against ComEd concerning outstanding bills makes it difficult to pinpoint when, or if, Omega will re-open.

If it doesn't re-open, would that upset you? Just about everyone has eaten there in their life, and there's no denying its place in Downers Grove history. Would you be sad to see it go, or do you not care? Answer the poll below and share any further opinions you have with us in the comment section.

Have been going to or driven past Omega for over 30 years. My first job was working second shift and it was one of the few places that was open all night. The food was always reliable and even at midnight, the place was crowded. I have to say though, I remember paying the bill with cash only (that is all they took) and when they rung it up on the register, the register always showed $0.00, I would guess they have been dodging taxes for years and not claiming their proper income.

In the last year, their prices skyrocketed, and the portions were smaller. Although the quality of the food was great, it was very expensive to dine there for a family on a budget. I hope they get their act together, for the sake of the community, and their faithful followers.

My family and I went years ago. The prices were too high back then, they cut the menu down so much, and then the staff was very rude. We did not like the way we got treated. Not friendly, so we never went back. I personally would not miss it.

There's no doubt they have slipped on food quality and service. I think they could still turn it around if they were committed to the restaurant's future success. They had a winning formula for many years. How did they lose their way? Seems as though money that should have been put back into the business may have gone elsewhere, and the downward spiral began. Too bad.

Absolutely and positively want Omega to re-open as soon as possible. This is a great restaurant with a great heart and one of the best things about living in Downers Grove. When they re-open, I will be one of the first people there.

I don't know if Omega has had the same problems, but my water smelled like sewage until I called the Vilalge. I don't know what is going on but I don't like it. We've been living in Downers Grove for over 30 years and this is the first time we have experienced this. If anyone else has, I'd like to know.

While I am sad to see a business fail and to see another vacant property, it obviously was not run well in the end. There are so many good options in the area that if it does not reopen, I would not be too devastated.

I understand that it has been sold 3-4 times, so "the original caring owners" are no longer affiliated with the establishment. The other "Omega Restaurants" in Lombard, Warrenville, and somewhere up north are not affiliated with the Downers Grove location.

It is currently the son of the original owner that is running the restaurant, Will. He's been doing so since his dad retired. Over the past few years they've had various partners, but as it stands right now, it's just the son.

I always thought it was over priced. I have not been there in a few years. Too many other great places to choose from.

Never went there when Dimitri's was open. I hope they re-open for the sake of the help. There aren't than many choices for breakfast around Downers anymore.

Good their not reopening, going to move to Schaumburg, they won't survive in Schaumburg too much good completion. Now he wants to sue the villages that supported them for, what 30 years?
Good riddance, see ya loosers!

It's a well known fact that for years they have consistently not paid suppliers, contractors for maintenance items like snow plowing and gyped the help. It's also known in certain circles that someone likes to gamble with the high rollers. As of late the food quality and service went down while prices skyrocketed. Doesn't seem right that someone can milk it for all it's worth and then turn around and sue everyone else. The lawsuit against the village, if it does get filed, will just cost the village tax dollars to defend. Sorry to see any business leave town, but in this case glad to see the scammer go.

Article that was posted Monday evening says that the owner will NOT re-open. He says he will file suit against the Village of Downers Grove, and has already allegedly sued Commonwealth Edison. So, a great institution will now close. Thanks to everyone for their comments.
