The Harlem Wizards are coming to Downers Grove on Sunday, February 17 for an evening of basketball and comedy in support of the Education Foundation of Downers Grove Grade School District 58. A team of District 58 students and staff and administrators, as well as representatives from the Downers Grove community, will take on the famous Harlem Wizards--who, according to their website, have not lost a game in more than 50 years!
“At the Wizards game, fans see amazing basketball talent combined with hilarious comedy. The athleticism, tricks, fancy teamwork and ball-handling wizardry, plus wild dunks not even seen in NBA games, engages and wows the most avid hoops fans. The comedy is for everybody. The Wizards look to push the envelope on fun, combining pre-planned comedic acts with spontaneous humor that fans of all ages will find laugh-out-loud funny,” according to the team’s website, www.HarlemWizards.com.
The event kicks off at 6 p.m. at Downers Grove South High School, 1436 Norfolk St. Doors open at 5 p.m. Tickets are $8 in advance at www.58foundation.org, www.HarlemWizards.com, and Community Bank of Downers Grove, 1111 Warren Ave., and $10 at the door.
Harlem Wizards souvenirs will be sold at the game, and there will be a free autograph session following the game.
It is because of events such as this one that the Foundation is able to pursue its mission of providing financial support to enhance education in District 58. Over its 10-year history, the Foundation has given nearly $400,000 in support to District 58 schools, including nearly $35,000 in classroom grants in 2012 alone. Other Foundation-funded programs include the Select 58 eighth-grade service awards, Sneak Preview seventh-grade orientation, and Distinguished Service Awards for staff.
