Downers Grove Woman Robbed at Gunpoint: Police Blotter

Downers Grove police reports, Feb. 10.

A Downers Grove woman was reportedly robbed at gunpoint Sunday night outside her apartment.

Police said the woman was pulling into a parking spot in front of her building—located in the 2200 block of Prentiss Drive—around 6:20 p.m. when she saw a man in a white ski mask walking toward her on a path that stretches from Target, 2333 63rd St. in Woodridge, to her complex.

The man passed the rear of the woman's vehicle, then turned around and approached her with a handgun, police said. The woman told police she immediately put her hands up and started screaming, "Don't shoot me."

The man reportedly reached into the vehicle and grabbed the woman's gray purse, which contained about $60 cash, medication, makeup and other miscellaneous items. He then left the scene, running eastbound in the parking lot.

The woman told police the encounter lasted only 20 to 30 seconds.

Police said the man was described as white, approximately 6 feet tall with a thin build and wearing a black sweater and black pants.

I am glad to hear that this woman was not hurt. If only that criminal had a universal background check I am sure this would not have happened. If only this woman was allowed to carry a taser gun or something of that sort. Would she have been a victim of this thug? So many questions and not enough answers.

One answer Mac: Concealed Carry in Illinois. Now.

Any concealed gun would most likely have been stolen along with everything else in her purse.

Tommy O'Stank: 1. What makes you think i'm from New Jersey? I'm not. (P.S. Quit stalking me, psycho) 2. How is that relevant to this story? 3. A gun is a deterrent, regardless of what liberal buffoons like yourself choose to believe.

And she would have had time to reach into her purse that was still in the car to get that concealed weapon?

For $60 - if criminals knew there was a possibility of someone having a weapon, they would think twice.

If someone is pointing a gun at me, I would not start reaching for a concealed weapon. A good way to get shot. I'm not anti concealed carry, I'm just being realistic. A home invasion where you have time to get to a gun is one thing, a surprise mugging is entirely different.

At that time of the night it is dark out already. She saw a man walking toward her on the path, wearing a ski mask - ok, dear one, get back in your car, LOCK THE DOORS and drive away! He did not 'jump' her, she SAW HIM COMING!

Funny how all you ladies assume that this woman would have it in her purse. Why couldn't she have in on her belt our strapped under her arm masked by her sweater? I am not saying that most women wouldn't put it in her purse. I am saying, however, that the smartest place would be to have it on the physical you. However, we don't have concealed carry here in Illinois so neither of these scenarios was possible for this victim. Tammy O----Yes I am guilty of providing a little sarcasm. The anti gun individuals are touting universal background checks for all gun owners. I thought that surely if this agenda----cough, cough, I mean legislation, was in place, this thug would not have had access to a gun. That's my point. Again, like I have mentioned before, if we were allowed to carry stun guns maybe we wouldn't have to be discussing "popping a cap" into anyone. Why would stun guns be outlawed? The government seems extremely interested in taking away any and all means that we would use in order to defend ourselves. Why is that, Tammy? Any guesses??? Why do you think this criminal chose this victim? Why is it typically a woman? Maybe because they are weaker, typically and wouldn't fight back? If the notion that this woman may be armed came into the thugs mind, maybe he wouldn't have committed the deed. Fact is, we will never know, I suppose.

Tammy O,
I have not made any assessments on you. I have not called you a name either. Nor would I ever throw sticks or stones at you. I am just saying that women need not only carry a gun in their purses. Think Angeling Jolie in Mr. and Mrs. Smith. She had it strapped to her inner thigh. Now, I realize that during the winter here in the midwest, that might not be feasible. Care to discuss my questions from above? I am looking for serious discussion. I truly want to know what you think. Why are more women targets of this sort of crime? Do you believe that criminals tend to pick out, what they deem, the most vulnerable of our citizens?

No, Tammy O - that was my exact point! She was NOT "jumped" - the story says she saw the guy coming! So - get back in the car, LOCK THE DOORS and start up the engine - like, DRIVE AWAY!

Hindsight is 20/20, right? Just because you notice someone walking near your car doesn't mean you feel alarmed enough to lock your doors and drive off. Consider that it is night time and cold, so seeing someone walking in a ski mask isn't necessarily alarming, especially if you're in a location that you'd previously felt safe. There really is no way to know how any individual will react in a given situation like this. I'd like to think that I would do something different, but I just don't know if I would panic or be able to think quickly. I don't think we can make any judgements about the victim in this case, and no blame should be placed on her, IMHO. For me, your comment comes across as partially blaming the victim, and I just don't agree. YMMV

When a person gets a Concealed Carry Permit, they have to take a class on how to handle situations like this and how to use a gun. Some people here think that you get the permit and a gun no questions asked.

Tammy or Tommy - whatever....I think you enjoy being argumentative for the sake of the sport. Navel lint picking is fun, too. If you read the information in the story as provided and THINK about it rather than blathering on the way you seem to enjoy doing, you'd understand what the other folks are commenting about. This one is not about you, it is about the incident and the victim. Probably good if you take your need for attention elsewhere, or pick a different argument, because you sure aren't making any sense with this one.

Tommy/Tammy is a compulsive replier. If you notice, he/she never actually posts an original thought, they merely comment on other people's posts. Perhaps they are as confused about themselves as they are about what people are commenting about. It would certainly explain the he/she identity crisis.
