Goodwill to Celebrate Grand Openings in Downers Grove, Lombard

The Downers Grove retail and donation center, located at 110 Ogden Ave., will host a grand opening weekend Feb. 14-17.

Goodwill Industries of Metropolitan Chicago will open two new retail and donation centers next month in Downers Grove and Lombard.

Both stores have set their grand opening weekends for Feb. 14-17, according to Goodwill officials.

The 18,000-square-foot Downers Grove store will be located at 110 W. Ogden Ave., next to Office Depot in the Downers Grove Plaza Shopping Center.

The Lombard Goodwill store will be located at 351 E. Roosevelt Road in a new, 19,000 square-foot facility.

In addition to being a retail and donation drop-off, the Lombard store will also have a Goodwill Workforce Connection Center, which offers free job search assistance. Services include computer and Internet access, resume preparation and on-site interviews.

"It's a great resource for people in the community who are having trouble finding a job," according to Cheryl Lightholder, spokesperson for Goodwill.

Goodwill stores sell previously donated items such as clothing, kitchen accessories and household decorations. Retail stores also feature donation centers for residents to drop off used items, Lightholder said.

"One of the things that we're interested in is providing high-quality products at a great value, but we also promote responsible recycling of household textiles," she said.

Goodwill currently has 48 stores—28 in Illinois and 20 in Wisconsin. In addition to the Downers Grove and Lombard sites, the company will also open two new retail centers in Wisconsin next month.

According to Goodwill's website, 84 percent of revenue from all retail centers goes toward the company's mission of providing training, employment and supportive services for people with disabilities or disadvantages.

Lightholder said the company hires an average of 45 employees for retail stores and donation centers.

Finally, another upscale resale shop. Downers is really starting to bring in some quality stores. Look out Oak Brook. If we keep this up we should be right up there with our fine southern suburbs of Dolton and Ford Heights. Between Savers and Salvation Army I might never leave DG again. I realize these places are for non-profit organizations, but do we really need another one.

I guess you haven't been to the Goodwill in Woodridge/Bolingbrook. It's a really nice store. As is the Savers. If you want to look down on these stores, that's certainly your choice, but many of us don't. Perhaps you like the look of the mall at 63rd and Woodward - empty storefronts.

There is one opening in Westchester too! I have no problem with Goodwill, I love thrifting and having a close place to drive up and donate my goods for reuse. The issue I have is Westmont has Standard Market, it's restaurant and a brand new Pet Supplies Plus. We have Goodwill, The adult store and a new breakfast place. All these businesses are great but how did DG lose out on PSP or Standard Market? We easily have more $$$ power than Westmont.

With almost 200 homes in pre-foreclosure or foreclosure in town, over 1,000 families frequenting just ONE of the food pantries, I think it's safe to say that people are struggling to make ends meet and would welcome a place they could get affordable clothing and home furnishings. Not to mention it's bringing more jobs to town. The Goodwill stores keep clean storefronts. I'm thrilled to see them come to town.

I know many families as well as mine that cannot afford to spend 80.00 + on a pair of jeans at the cute jean shop downtown DG. Plus I like to see my money going to help others, instead of more profit for the big stores
Welcome Goodwill to our community, and best luck to you
Ty- I would be willing to help you pack your bags if you desire to move somewhere else

I am very glad this is coming here because I love shopping at these stores and we donate a lot to the Goodwill but we went to the north store because Bolingbrook frowned on our donations as they were so backed up on processing...
