Joliet Diocese List of Credibly Accused Abusers Includes Former Downers Grove Pastors

Total of priests believed to have abused children now stands at 34.

In addition to the thousands of pages to be released detailing decades of abuse at the hands of Catholic priests in the Joliet Diocese, the organization Tuesday also released an updated list of credibly accused abusers.

The list includes two priests from the Divine Savior Parish in Downers Grove, including its founding pastor, the Rev. Donald Pock.

The accusations against Pock were brought to light in 2002—two years before his death, according to the diocese. He served as pastor of Divine Savior from 1968 until 1975.

Divine Savior's website states that Pock left due to ill health, but a 2006 report by Sun-Times Media claimed he was removed from the parish and sent for counseling after allegations of sexual abuse.

Pock was then appointed associate pastor at St. Patrick Parish in Joliet, and became pastor of St. Joseph in Manteno in 1978. In 1987, he became pastor of St. Peter Parish in Itasca, according to his obituary.

Pock was removed from St. Peter in 2002 because of allegations from another man, according to the Sun-Times Media report.

Also listed was the Rev. Lawrence Gibbs, a pastor who served Divine Savior Parish for a few months in 1977. In the late 1970s and early 1980s, Gibbs was accused of molesting children during his stints at churches in Lombard, Lockport and Glen Ellyn, according to a CBS Chicago report.

The list of Joliet Diocesan priests with credible allegations now stands at 34. According an NBC5 report, the list includes the names of priests named in lawsuits and some who have already been convicted.

Find the updated list here.

As part of a lawsuit settlement also approved Tuesday, the Catholic Diocese of Joliet will release more than 7,000 internal documents that reportedly show that every bishop since the 1950s has been aware of diocese priests sexually abusing children.

The documents include personnel files and other items related to 15 diocese priests accused of sexual abuse over a 50-year period ending in the 1990s. They will be released by plaintiff David Rudofski through his Chicago lawyer, Terrence Johnson, as part of his settlement with the diocese.

Although the diocese bears the Joliet name, it actually encompasses seven counties—Will, DuPage, Grundy, Kendall, Ford, Iroquois and Kankakee.

I do not go to Mass regularly and question the existence of God who is supported by such a perverted institution.

I know a few of these priests and have been in contact with other hypocritical pervs in the Chicago Diocese. I know people who take the former Joliet Bishop on golf outings. You know, the bishop who protected a lot of these guys.
I am ashamed to be a Catholic.

I to dislike what the church did in rearguards to the cover-up, but at the same time try to understand that it’s not all of us who are like this, just a small group getting lots of publicity. It saddens me also, but it’s hard trying to do good when you have good people who are having a hard time forgiving and moving on saying the church is all made up of corrupt priests. Other faiths and other vocations that God loves have the same problems, we are human and Jesus loved being with sinners.
The same God that looks down on the good also looks down on the bad. God gives us a free will and God will never take that from us. God will also be the final judge of our actions. All we need to do is to be good even to those who have persecuted us. That is what Lent is all about; look what they did to God’s son, or maybe I should say, look what we did to God’s son, those of us who sin and we all do, don’t we?
Please pray for us, those who try every day to be the best we can for others.

Also, instead of giving money to the Diocesan Appeal, try donating to SNAP.

I am so glad that I left this sexist, predatory, hypocritical religion years ago. I actually feel smart that I was able to see past all the crap this "church" hides and does. Sadly, I don't see people waking up.......ever! They are like brain washed and abused house wives who have no self worth. They have more money than they know what to do with but their schools are crumbling and old. They drink out of gold chalices and wear the finest garments and act better than their "flock", all while covering up sex abuse perpetrated by their own people. They force parents of the children in their schools to take a class that tells them how to spot a sexual predator and what they can and can't do while in the school around the children. What a slap in the face to the parents. Perhaps, someone can tell the diocese that the predatory behavior was an INSIDE job so not to bother the parents with this crap. What a joke, if you ask me. Why anyone would attend that class is beyond my comprehension. It's just smoke and mirrors! We will look like we are trying to combat this behavior by diverting attention away from the priests and placing it on the parents. They are so stupid they will never know. They will do anything to keep their kids safe......except for sending them to a non catholic school!!! LOL my my my

Father Pock married my late husband and I in 1975. I never would have thought of him like that. It makes me sad that he was the one that married us.

I don't understand this sentence from the article. "The accusations were brought to light after Pock's death in 2002—two years before his death, according to the diocese." It can't be both 2 years before his death and 2 years after. Which is it?

If you will look at the list mentioned early in the article, Pock was accused in 2002 and died in 2004. So he was accused two years before his death. I agree the sentence as written was confusing.

The church, made up of humans, pretty much acted as any institution would have / did at that time (pre-1990s).

There is very little, if any (?) indication of this behavior being covered up in the last 20 years. These abuse cases took place over 20 years ago.

At least the Boy Scouts have sense not to allow gay scout leaders which really is the majority of these cases were: adult gay men preying on / engaging in such activity with younger men.

The so-called pedophelia cases (priests with pre-pubescent children) are a very, very small percentage of the cases.

And, I do look forward to the future, as thd Church continues to dwindle in numbers, to a time when priests can just shepard their flock and not have to worry about intellctuals like Mac Miller (above).

Being a pedophile has nothing to do with being gay. Most pedophiles are heterosexual men. It's a sickness of the mind, not an orientation. Victims of pedophiles are both little boys and little girls. Get the facts and stop spreading homophobic propaganda. It sad and disgusting enough, no need to add homophobic hate speech.

I agree that the Church should have done more when the abuse occurred—laicizing and filing charges against priests, publicizing the abuse, putting controls in place, and “cleaning house” immediately. However, the press and public are missing the bigger picture.

Sexual abuse is rampant in society. A Google search shows public schools and other denominations with the same kinds of abuse problems—and these are happening NOW! One example:

    http://www.cbsnews.com/2100-215_162-1933687.html
"[T]hink the Catholic Church has a problem?" she said. "The physical sexual abuse of students in schools is likely more than 100 times the abuse by priests."

As the National Catholic Register's reporter Wayne Laugesen points out, the federal report said 422,000 California public-school students would be victims before graduation — a number that dwarfs the state's entire Catholic-school enrollment of 143,000.

I feel sorry for those who have taken the sinful human behavior of a few (the John Jay report: accusations against 4% of priests) and vilified the entire Church, as well as turning away from God. May God Bless you and grant you forgiveness for your hardness of heart, and peace.

While the actions of the abusers is truly horrifying, that's not the reason for the vilification of the Church. It's about the way church officials and the Vatican covered up the abuse and essentially provided new victims to the abusers when they were moved to different parishes. That vilification is well deserved, and the Church needs to completely come clean on this. That hasn't happened yet. Lawsuits are forcing the issue, otherwise we would never have seen this list.

Having been a teenager during Fr.Pock's tenure at Divine Savior..It is very sad that my parents put so much to the initial development of the new church, while bad behavior was going on.
