Mug Shot Monday: Aug. 20
The following photos were taken at the Downers Grove Police Department between Aug. 10-14.
Information for Mug Shot Monday is provided by the Downers Grove Police Department. Charges are not evidence of guilt. They are a record of police actions taken on a given day, and persons charged with a crime are presumed innocent until proven guilty in court. If you or a family member are charged or cited and the case is subsequently adjudicated, we encourage you to notify the editor. We will verify and report the outcome.

Dispite the disclaimer, publishing these photos are highly inflamatory. I feel that these should only be done after conviction and all appeals are exhusted! I speak from experiance!

Agree, Patch is just pandering for site hits at this point trying to stay alive. The concept of reporting local news is long gone.

Having had a column buried behind 'mug shot Mondays' last week, I agree whole heartedly Dan. However, having met Amanda last week and discussing her vision for a more locally focused Patch, I'm confidant you'll approve of the changes in content coming soon.

I must admit, I am very close to deleting my email subscription for The Patch. I am distressed over Mug Shot Monday. It is a troubling feature. It is very gossipy, sensational & harmful. It parades people who have not yet had their day in court in front of the community. It puts them up to ridicule and public speculation.
My email downloads The Patch to my iPhone. Mug Shot Monday displays photos of recent arrests without charges being displayed. God forbid the charges were a misplaced insurance card or expired drivers license. I can only imagine how bad I would feel, if I or a loved one, were arrested & shamed by Mug Shot Monday.
For now I will avoid reading Mug Shot Monday.i can only hope our new editor will raise The Patch to higher ground & away from tabloid type fodder. I hope her first order of business is to eliminate the Mugshot Monday.

Hi everyone,
Thanks for your comments. All feedback—good and bad—is valuable as I get started in Downers Grove. I haven't run Mug Shot Monday on Lemont Patch, but I think it's worth noting that this feature was picked up in DG because some of Patch's most respected and successful editors run it on their sites. I believe the Chicago Tribune runs mug shot galleries as well. I know it's not for everyone, but there's another camp that argues it's public information and should be posted.
Because I'm curious, do you prefer to see blotter in its simplest form, rather than with a mug? We post blotter that has essentially the same information, just no pictures. Also, what type of coverage would you like to see moving forward? As I said, all feedback is valuable.
Thanks,
Amanda Luevano

If it's a matter of public safety, like a burglar or someone who targets children, I can understand a picture. But someone pulled over for a traffic stop who gets arrested for an expired license? I really don't need to point and laugh at that person. Garbage cans are also public domain, and there are probably horrible people who want to know who has a pregnancy test in there, so at some point you need to be a responsible gatekeeper between what nosy people WANT to know, and what people NEED to know.
As for what I would like to see, I think we need more school coverage. We also have at least one live theater group that's virtually been ignored, as well as other arts groups. More news about interesting people in our town would be good, too.

Hi Susan,
In response to feedback we got last week, this week we did not include mug shots of people who were charged with minor traffic violations. I'll let Amanda respond to the rest of your comment, which I think includes some great suggestions for coverage. By the way, Amanda's expertise is education reporting, so I think you'll be very happy with what's forthcoming!
Thanks,

I have to agree with Glenn...If you don't like your picture in the paper, don't get arrested. It's pretty easy to avoid getting picked up for shoplifting or DUI....Don't do it!

Actually I would like to see a caption under each photo on the type of crime committed to bring more community awareness on what is actually happening in my and surrounding neighborhoods. I also subscribe to other suburb patch news and was very surprised with the illegal activities happening, a good example is Naperville.
I never realize how much illegal activity was going on until reading the patch.

Wow, you're right dude. That IS infuriating. Nobody else interchange 'lapsed insurance' and 'lapsed licenses', ok? It is MADDENING! Argh, I'm so mad!
