United Central Bank in Downers Grove Robbed by Masked Gunman
Police are still searching for a white man wearing a black ski mask, black hooded sweatshirt and jeans, who allegedly robbed the bank at gunpoint around 11:09 a.m. Thursday.
A Downers Grove bank was robbed at gunpoint Thursday morning by a man wearing a mask, authorities said.
United Central Bank, 1303 Ogden Ave., was robbed around 11:09 a.m., according to Downers Grove police. No one was injured during the incident.
The man left southbound on foot before police arrived on scene, according to Downers Grove Police Sgt. Harry Andler.
The suspect is a white man in a black ski mask, wearing a black hooded sweatshirt and jeans, Andler said.
Downers Grove police did not immediately release details on how much money was stolen during the incident.
The incident prompted "soft lockdowns" at Downers Grove North High School and Herrick Middle School shorty after 11:30 a.m., police said.
Although school was not in session Thursday, all exterior doors were locked at both schools, Andler said.
At North High, practices were being held for gymnastics, basketball and wrestling when the lockdown occurred, but students were not affected, according to District 99 Communications Director Jill Browning.
Police swept the school and determined there was no threat. The school returned to normal shortly after 12:30 p.m., Browning said.
Downers Grove police are continuing to search the area for the suspect. They are asking the public to call 911 to report any suspicious person or vehicle.

I was talking to a teller at my bank, and she was short of $5 bills. She said that with the rash of bank robberies, banks are cutting back on the amount of cash that they have in a branch.
It's unfair to say that DG is no longer safe. This could have been a bank anywhere, where getting away is easy. Ogden and 75th are both streets that are easy to get away, expecially near a tollway interchange.

I mean people my age don't really visit the local bank branch. I get direct deposit, telephone and online transfer of funds, cash from an ATM, debit cards, and I can even open new accounts online.
Only people in retail who handle cash really NEED to go to a local branch. More and more retail sales are being done on credit and debit cards than ever before. I just believe that local branches will be phased out over the next decade or two.

I still go to the branch. I also still pay my bills by mailing a check. Maybe it's how I was raised. Maybe it's because computers are still prone to glitches. I once ordered a product on line, and the website seized up in the middle of the process. Once the site started working a few hours later, I finished the order. I would up with a double order and had to deal with customer service on returning one order and trying to get a full refund.
Needless to say, banking by phone or the web just doesn't sit well with me.

With online banking and the ATM at Walgreens my banking is basically done. I can't remember the last time I was in a bank branch.
