Visions for Vacancies: 734 Ogden Avenue
Downers Grove Patch asks readers to play developer and share their ideas for open storefronts around town.
Whether it's residents complaining about the businesses along the strip or the village creating programs to spur site improvement, a lot of attention is paid to Ogden Avenue in Downers Grove.
So, for our newest edition of Visions for Vacancies, we're taking a look at an empty Ogden Avenue location and asking our readers to tell us what they would like to see fill that space. The location is east of Main Street and is near the Pepperidge Farm store. Taking this specific space for what it is and where it's located, what would you like to see fill it?
Share your thoughts with us in the comments section.

As a temporary fix, rent at below market rates to Local Democratic candidates who will appear on this fall's ballot. Break the stranglehold by the GOP who continue to enrich themselves at our expense.

How about a good family owned coffee house that is open from 5 am till 9 pm weekdays and till midnight on Friday & Saturday's that is a home for art and music? Jazz, classical , rock etc with no booze. Maybe a karoke night. It could be a place for teens and adults to hang out in a positive environment. A model exists in Villa Park. It is called Funky Java and has been in business at least 10 years.

What self respecting business owner would open a business along the same stretch that features spank spas, tat parlors (not one but two..) and the soon to be famous POWER MART, which occupies and entire busy intersection just to sell cigarettes?
Personally I think the only solution is to implode the empty, antiquated structures that exist and replace them with modern, brick strip malls in order to attract the businesses most of us want. The building that features The Wing Stop (Ogden and Drendel) is a great example.

Maybe we should get more people who can think of some realy serious solutions istead of sarcastic comments. You have all been a big help!

Really, Andrea? I count two somewhat sarcastic suggestions (the first comment being an obvious one and a tongue in cheek suggestion about a Walgreens). I count 7-8 posts with serious considerations (some of those posts with multiple legit suggestions).

How about a good old fashioned style butcher shop, where one could get fresh cuts, not like the pre-packaged stuff at the supermarket.

Oh My God...A butcher! Fantastic idea! When we lived in the city, we had Paulina Meat Market and it was amazing. I would love a butcher!

Head on down to Standard Market. One of the best butchers/meat departments in the Chicago area.

How about a Big Boy? Do they still exist? Or a halfway decent american restaurant that serves up good quality food unlike emmys or omegas.

How about a men's or boy's clothing store? There hasn't been anywhere to shop for men's clothes, other than the department store chains, since Herbert's closed. The last time there was a clothing store for boys was in Hinsdale, probably back in the 1980s.

An environmentally conscious, locally owned grocer that sells organic produce, grass fed beef, herbs and spices etc. Something Downers Grove can be proud of for a chance. Definitely not a Chick-fil-a or Starbuck please!

Do you mean The Lemon Tree, which is right here in town and features grass fed Nieman Ranch Beef and organic produce?

The Village of Downers Grove makes it difficult for first time small business owners to get started. There should be incentives for first time business owners. Also, landlords should consider and provide a reduced rate in the first year of lease. After all, would they rather have an unoccupied space with $0 income?
In doing so, Downers Grove would have more diverse stores, bring in more revenue, and make it more desirable to live and shop.
To get to Roberts question regarding vacancies on Ogden, a Rubber Art Stamp store, which could also hold classes for creating crafts.

I couldn't have said it better. You would think that in these economic times The Village of Downers Grove would take a vested interest in the success of a small business.

I'm not sure if it would fit in this particular location, but a small Outdoor/Gun store would be nice. There used to be Midwest Sports (I believe that was the name) on Ogden for years. Instead of having to run to one of the big boxes for fishing or hunting items, one could just go down the street.
