Downers Grove 'Recycling Extravaganza' Set for Saturday
Event will be held from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Downers Grove Public Works Facility, 5101 Walnut Ave.
The village of Downers Grove and the Downers Grove Park District will host a Recycling Extravaganza on Saturday.
The event will be held from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Downers Grove Public Works Facility, 5101 Walnut Ave. The event is free and open to residents of DuPage County, but does not include businesses or not-for-profit organizations.
Vehicles must enter the Recycling Extravaganza site from Curtiss Street, via northbound Walnut Avenue or Belmont Road. Access from eastbound Curtiss Street and southbound Walnut Avenue will be restricted. Volunteers will direct traffic in the lot and assist customers dropping off their donations.Vehicles must be in line by 1 p.m to be served. Those who arrive after 1 p.m. will be turned away.As of Jan. 1, 2012, TVs, computers (and laptops), monitors, printers, computer peripherals, VCRs/DVD players, gaming systems, MP3 players and other electronic items are banned from Illinois landfills.
Items Accepted
- Carpet and padding: Any size is acceptable but it must be dry. Wool carpeting is not accepted.
- Paper shredding: Limit of two brown paper grocery bags per vehicle. Paper will be collected and shredded off-site by a certified National Association for Information Destruction (NAID) document destruction company.
- Lead acid batteries: Automotive-size battery cores—car, boat, truck, motorcycle, computer, sump pump.
- Rechargable household batteries only. Alkaline batteries will not be accepted.
- Electronics: Large and small electronics, TVs, VCRs, DVD players, cameras, computers, laptops, copiers, cords, discs, electric typewriters, fax/adding machines, hard drives, key boards, mice, monitors, PDAs, printers, scanners, small kitchen appliances, radios, speakers, stereos, telephones, zip drives, hair dryers, and more.
- Cell phones and accessories
- Textiles and gently-used clothing
- Propane tanks
- Scrap metal
- Bicycles, in any condition
- Ink cartridges
- New and gently used building materials, tools, and appliances
- Furniture, in useable condition: dressers, tables, chairs, dishes and silverware
- Musical instruments
- Art supplies
- Fire extinguishers
- Compact Fluorescent Light Bulbs, only.
- Eye glasses
- Hearing aids
- American flags
- Alkaline batteries
- Refrigerators and large household appliances
- Air conditioners and dehumidifiers
- Smoke alarms
- Incandescent light bulbs and fluorescent tubes
- Thermostats
- Paint of any kind
- Household hazardous waste such as cleaning agents, chemicals
