Frigid Cold Returns

Frigid cold temps are expected to return to the area for the start of the work week.

The National Weather Service is predicting wind chill values as low as -20 to -25 across portions of the area and again Monday night into early Tuesday.

Snow fell across north central and northeast Illinois on Saturday, tapering to flurries during the evening, and is expected to pick up again to accumulating snow overnight, according to the National Weather Service. The majority of the accumulation early Sunday morning will occur south of Interstate 80.

Meanwhile, Chicago has entered the record books for the number of subzero days this winter season.

So far this winter there have been 19 sub-zero temperature days making this season the eighth season in history with the most sub-zero low temperature days. In comparison, the typical winter has seven sub-zero temp days, according to the NWS.

The most sub-zero temperature days — 25 days — occurred during the winter of 1884-85 in Chicago.

"Chicago is within striking distance of the all-time record for number of subzero lows in a season," according to the National Weather Service.
