Five Great Non-Profits Making a Difference

A look at some hard-working organizations helping out in Downers Grove.

Downers Grove is full of caring and dedicated individuals working to keep the community strong. Whether they're helping people through a rough time, supporting education, caring for cancer patients or tending abandoned animals, these groups make our village a wonderful place to live.  

There are many wonderful orgnizations doing great work in our town, and they all deserve our recognition and support. Here are five that caught our attention this week:

Supported by 21 area churches, 17 corporate donors and 10 other nonprofit organizations, this organization represents a community coming together as a whole to help others.  The Walk-In Ministry of Hope helps the less fortunate members of our society find the physical and emotional social services available to them. It also provides emergency assistance for individuals and families in crisis, from the working poor to the recently unemployed to the chronically homeless.

The Education Foundation endeavors  to enrich education for District 58 children by providing additional resources that help enhance academic and skill development outside the scope of the regular district budget. The foundation also encourages education innovation and creativity, and helps forge partnerships between the schools and the community.

FISH is another inter-faith organization that maintains a free food pantry and clothes closet, and participates in the federal surplus commodity distribution program. On an emergency basis, FISH's volunteer drivers provide local transportation to doctor and dental appointments, therapy, court dates and public aid offices. The organization also provides limited financial assistance for utility bills, housing and car repairs.

Helping men and their families make informed decisions about prostate cancer detection and treatment, Us Too was founded in 1990 by five men who had been treated for prostate cancer.  The organization's provides free information, materials and peer-to-peer support to help with all aspects of the disease, from detection to coping with ongoing survivorship.

The West Suburban Humane Society operates an animal shelter dedicated to finding safe, permanent and compatible homes for domestic dogs and cats. It also  educates the public about how to humanely care for dogs and cats. West Suburban promotes the humane care of dogs and cats by working with governmental and other agencies, and provides the highest-quality veterinary services and training available to the animals in their care.
