Garden Walk to Honor Neighbor's Memory

Neighbors of avid gardner Bernice Swick, who died in January, are hosting the event on Sunday.

Bernice Swick was known to her neighbors in the Elmore neighborhood as an avid gardner and true friend.

So they felt it would be fitting to honor her memory—Swick died unexpectedly in January—with a neighborhood garden walk from noon to 3 p.m. Sunday, July 17, which would have been her 72nd birthday.

A dozen gardens in the area of Lee Street, Elmore Avenue and Bending Oaks will be open to visitors. No tickets or reservations are required, although donations will be accepted to benefit the Morton Arboretum in Lisle, which was one of Swick's favorite local destinations.

A map and descriptions of the gardens is available online or at 1760 Elmore Ave., Swick's home garden, on the day of the event. Visitors may start anywhere on the tour.

A flyer for the event invites visitors to "come and share the enjoyment of something Bernice truly treasured—her lovely garden...Touching the soil and nurturing growing things always remained among her greatest pleasures."
