Metra Abruptly Changes Schedule for Evening Rush

Heads up, Metra commuters and those waiting on them: it might be even more difficult for them to get home Monday night.

The arctic blast gripping the Chicago area has led to reduced Metra offerings Monday evening.

Due to the continued hazardous weather conditions, Metra advised customers that they will be operating modified schedules during the evening rush, according to a notice on the Metra website.
Specifically, the BNSF to Aurora line and all three Union Pacific lines will be operating reduced schedules.  BNSF and UP riders are strongly advised to check Metra's website, listen to station announcements and check information boards at their departure stations.

Metra attributed the problems to "switches and signals it says are vulnerable to extreme temperatures and moisture because they rely on electronic circuitry," reports the Chicago Tribune. The weather wreaked havoc on Metra's Monday morning, causing more than 25 cancellations and delays on most of its lines.
