American Wind Band Free Concert at Lincoln Center

The American Wind Band, in its 21st season, will present their free winter concert on Sunday, February 27 at 3:00 PM in the Lincoln Center Auditorium at 935 Maple Avenue in downtown Downers Grove.

The concert will feature both classical and contemporary music. Highlights will include an arrangement of the Finale of Antonin Dvorak’s New World Symphony, Sergi Prokofieff’s March Op. 99, Funiculi Funicula, Greenbriars of Wexley, That’s A Plenty, the National Emblem March and Enesto Cavallini’s Adagio-Tarantella, featuring a challenging clarinet solo by David Creighton.

An extremely talented musician, Mr. Creighton played his first professional gig at the age of 10 as an assistant church organist. Retired from a career with Kraft, Inc., Mr. Creighton holds Bachelor and Master degrees in Music Education from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, as well as a Master of Business Administration degree from Northwestern University. Mr. Creighton is enjoying the freedom of early retirement and spends his time pursuing his first love – music – specifically on the saxophone, clarinet and flute, as a member of multiple concert bands, orchestras, big bands and paid weekend gigs at weddings, parties and concerts.

Mr. Creighton’s professional performance credits include the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra, and backup groups for Sonny & Cher, Kate Smith, Dick Hayes and Mel Torme, Aretha Franklin, Lou Rawls, Ben Vereen, The Four Tops, The Temptations, Don Rickles, Joan Rivers, Marie Osmond, and the Orchestras of Louis Bellson, Clark Terry, Guy Lombardo, Buddy DeFranco, and local Chicagoans Barrett Deems and Bill Porter.

The American Wind Band is under the direction of musical director Angelo Iovinelli, a resident of Downers Grove for over 40 years. Mr. Iovinelli also plays the French horn with the Senior Suburban Orchestra in Downers Grove, and was the Band, Orchestra and Choir Director at Riverside-Brookfield High School for 25 years, and has taught at many other schools in the Chicagoland area.

The American Wind Band was created to promote and encourage the understanding, appreciation, and study of Concert Band literature through performances. The Band, by presenting concerts in several venues, extends education and enjoyment of band music to all those in attendance. Benefits from concert performances support scholarships to local young musicians to continue their studies in the field of music performance.

The American Wind Band, made up of 40-50 volunteer musicians from the western suburbs and Chicagoland, plays five free concerts annually in Downers Grove. New members are always welcome, and no auditions are required. Rehearsals are Tuesday evenings from 7:30 – 9:30 PM at O’Neill Middle School in Downers Grove.
