'Cocomero' Frozen Yogurt Shop Opens in Downtown Downers Grove

The long-awaited downtown shop opened quietly Wednesday at 5150 Main St.

Downtown Downers Grove just got a little sweeter.

Cocomero, a frozen yogurt and smoothie shop, opened quietly Wednesday at 5150 Main St., about four months after the business was first announced. It took over the space formerly occupied by Knitche, which moved across the street this summer.

"We're excited to finally open our Downers Grove location," owner Kevan Lee said. "Cocomero has been very popular in other communities, so we hope people like it here, too."

Lee and his brother-in-law opened the first Cocomero in Champaign in 2009. Lee's brother-in-law opened another location this summer in Elmhurst.

Cocomero—an Italian word for watermelon that Lee's brother-in-law found on the Internet—carries frozen yogurt in about a dozen flavors, ranging from Dutch chocolate and strawberry to classic vanilla and peanut butter. Customers can choose from roughly 30 toppings—fruits, candies and cereal—before weighing the cup and paying the appropriate amount.

The frozen yogurt will be liquid-based instead of powder-based, as Lee said powder-based yogurt only has about one-third of the active cultures of the liquid-based yogurt. In addition to frozen yogurt, Cocomero will also sell bubble teas, smoothies, flavored lattes and other healthy items, Lee said.

“It's really healthy food and if I can't feed it to my kid I don't sell it,” he said.

Cocomero will be open from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday and Friday, and noon to 10 p.m. Saturday. Lee said he is trying out different times before setting regular hours.

Due to technical difficulties, the store will only accept cash for the next few days.

Lee said he hopes downtown patrons will stop by Cocomero in the coming weeks—even though the weather isn't ideal for frozen treats.

"It's getting colder, but hopefully people will still come and try it out," he said.
