'Paperworks' to Close After More than a Decade in Downers Grove

Stationery store Paperworks will close at the end of the month. Owner Ellen Arnold plans to retire.

After more than 10 years in Downers Grove, beloved stationery store Paperworks will close for good Nov. 26.

The store's origin traces back to a labor of love in owner Ellen Arnold's home11 and a half years ago. A realtor at the time, Arnold was beginning to learn Microsoft Publisher, to create "feature sheets" to showcase properties. It got her creative juices flowing, and soon people were requesting her help with invitations.

It dawned on Arnold that someone would open a stationery store in Downers Grove—so why not her?

Paperworks, located at 1010 Curtiss St., has become known as a store that "makes me want to have a party," with products ranging from invitations, announcements and "everything you could need for a wedding."

Arnold decided to close after a year-long battle with illness. She plans to retire.

"It got to be too much," she said, "so it seemed like a good time."

All in-stock merchandise is for sale for at least 50 percent off, along with the furniture and fixtures. The last day for purchasing stock will be Tuesday, Nov. 26.

Though the doors will close permanently, Arnold herself won't be going far. She'll stay in Downers Grove, and plans to spend her time volunteering. She hopes to head for warmer climate during the winter months next year.
