Belmont Underpass Project Slightly Ahead of Schedule

Two underpass lanes expected to open Mid-October.

Construction on the Belmont underpass project is about two-thirds complete and the majority of the work is expected to be completed in 2012, according to a Metra spokesperson.

The project, originally projected to wrap up by June 2013, could have the bulk of its major work done a little bit early, potentially leaving cosmetic work like landscaping to be finished in 2013.

In the short term, big changes are coming. Mid-October will see two lanes of the underpass opened—one in each direction—according to Michael Gillis, spokesperson for Metra.

At that time, crews will remove the temporary road travelers have been using on Belmont and start working on the remaining underpass lanes. A planned pedestrian underpass is expected to be finished by spring of next year.

Additionally, a relatively new structure erected on the west side of Belmont just east of the is a pumping station to help with water drainage on the underpass.
