Halloween Guide: Trick-or-Treating, Window Painting, Costume Parades in Downers Grove

A weekend packed with Halloween activities kicks off Friday night in downtown Downers Grove.

Halloween is just around the corner, and Downers Grove has plenty of activities planned for adults and kids alike.

FRIDAY, OCT. 26

Moonlight Madness

When: 5 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Where: Downtown Downers Grove

What: The Downtown Management Corporation is sponsoring an evening of "spooktacular savings" at several downtown businesses. Participating merchants are scheduled to participate:

Midnight Showing of Ghostbusters at the Tivoli

When: 11:30 p.m. to 1 a.m.

Where: Tivoli Theatre, 5021 Highland Ave.

What: The Tivoli will kick off a weekend of Halloween activities with a midnight showing of the classic film Ghostbusters. Admission is $5.

SATURDAY, OCT. 27

HGNA Pancake Breakfast

When: 8 a.m. to 11 a.m.

Where: Ballydoyle Irish Pub, 5157 Main St.

What: Helping Girls Navigate Adolescence Inc. will host its annual pancake breakfast at 8 a.m. Village officials will be on hand to serve a menu of panckaes, sausages, fresh fruit, juice, milk, Great American Bagels and Caribou Coffee. Tickets, which will be available at the door, are $6 for adults and $3 for children. Kids 2 and under eat for free. Raffle tickets will also be available during the event for a variety of prizes, including an iPad 3, a private sailboat cruise on Lake Michigan and 25 downtown Downers Grove gift certificates. 

Downtown Window Painting

When: 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Where: Meet at Ballydoyle Irish Pub, 5157 Main St.

What: The Downers Grove Rotary Club and the Downtown Management Corporation are sponsoring their annual Halloween window painting. Paints will be supplied at 933A Curtiss St., but participants are asked to bring their own brushes and a non-perishable food donation for the FISH pantry. Clean, gently-used coats will also be collected for homeless veterans.

Baird and Warner Halloween Happening

When: 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Where: Tivoli Theatre, 5021 Highland Ave.

What: Baird and Warner is hosting a costume contest beginning at 9 a.m., with judging scheduled to begin at 9:30 a.m. Prizes will be awarded. Following the contest, the Tivoli will offer a free screening of How to Train Your Dragon (Rated-PG) at 11 a.m. Free popcorn will be provided. "Voices from the Past"

When: 10 a.m. to noon

Where: Downers Grove Historical Society, 935 Maple Ave.

What: Have you ever walked through the Main Street Cemetery and wished you could hear the stories of those buried there? The Downers Grove Historical Society, with the help of the Grove Players, will make their voices heard again. Admission is free. No reservations necessary.

SUNDAY, OCT. 28

Halloween Costume Parade and Trick-or-Treating

When: Parade runs 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m., trick-or-treating runs until 4 p.m.

Where: Downtown Downers Grove

What: The Downers Grove Lions Club is sponsoring a costume parade at 12:30 p.m. Participants should meet at the parking lot west of the Main Street Metra Station, across from the Caribou Coffee. The parade will proceed down Main Street to Fishel Park. After the parade, trick-or-treating will run until 4 p.m. at various downtown merchants.

WEDNESDAY, OCT. 31

Trunk of Treats

When: 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Where: Faith United Methodist Church, 432 59th St.

What: Kids are invited to wear their Halloween costumes and trick-or-treat in the church parking lot, where cars will be lined up with trunks full of candy. Hot dogs and hot cocoa will be provided for free. For more information, call 630-968-0442 or visit www.faithchurchdg.org.

Village Trick-or-Treating

There are no mandated hours for trick-or-treating in Downers Grove, but police recommend that activity take place during daylight hours.
