Five Things You Need to Know for June 16

The Park Board meets, books and ebooks and a new dance studio moves into the downtown.

1. Park Board to hold budget hearing

Among items on the agenda for tonight's Park Board meeting are a public hearing on the Fiscal Year 2011-2012 budget and discussion of a possible joint residency program with the Westmont Park District. Also a possibility during the public comments portion of the meeting: further discussion of the Park District's field use policy by representatives of various youth baseball organizations.

There's a 30 percent chance that yesterday's showers and thunderstorms will return for a repeat appearance today, according to the National Weather Service. Cloudy skies and a high near 78 also are predicted, along with west winds of about 10 mph, with gusts as high as 15 mph. So it looks like those hot-fun-in-the-summertime activities will have to wait another day. 

3. DLD Dance Center comes to town

The DLD Dancer Center, 912 Curtiss St., celebrated its grand opening last weekend and is currently signing up students for classes and camps beginning next week. The studio offers classes in breakdancing and hip hop as well as ballet, tap, jazz and other forms. 

4. Sssh! I'm reading my iPhone

In its May/June newsletter, the Downers Grove Library notes patrons can use their library card to check out audiobooks and ebooks from eMediaLibrary and download them to their iPhone or iPad via an app that is also available on the site. Access the app's "Get Books" feature to browse titles.

5. AAUW hosts 53rd Annual Used Book Sale

Today is presale day at the Downers Grove Area Branch AAUW's 53rd Annual Used Book Sale at Henry Puffer School, 2220 Haddow Ave. The presale allows book aficionados to get first crack at this year's offerings from 6 to 9 p.m. Admission to the presale is $5.

The sale continues from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Friday, June 17, with free admission and again from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, June 18. On Saturday, you can scoop up a bag of books for just $6.

Proceeds of the sale are contributed to the AAUW Education Foundation, which supports reentry to education. project grants and fellowships. The organization also sponsors several Back-t0-the-Books Scholarships for local women.
