After highs well in the 90s the past two days, temperatures will nosedive to around 59 degrees by 4 p.m., according to the National Weather Service. The event will feature 10 martini stations and complimentary appetizers including meatball sliders and backyard chicken skewers. The band SODA will provide live music. A fashion show featuring the spring and summer collection of Chicago area designer Britney Devaris is also planned

4. Travel with Norbert the Gnome

As part of the "Into the Reading Woods" summer reading program, the Junior Room staffers are encouraging participants to travel with their Norbert the Traveling Gnome mascot.

Kids can pick up a sheet from the Junior Room or print one from home, color and cut out Norbert, bring him on vacation, and email back a picture of their summer adventure. Pictures of Norbert’s many journeys will be posted on a map in the Junior Room through August 19.

4. Residents encouraged to register for Smart 911 service

The is encouraging residents to register for Smart 911 service, which has recently been implemented by DuPage County. Smart 911 is a software program that allows residents to provide information they want to make available to 9-1-1 dispatchers such as medical conditions, allergies, physical and mental disabilities, photos of family members and the home addresses of cell phone callers, according to the village website.

Smart 911 allows dispatchers to access the address associated with a cell phone number, which will improve emergency response and service, according to the village. Residents can register by visiting the secure website, www.Smart911.com. The information provided is completely confidential and is only available to emergency responders during a 9-1-1 call.

5. School's out, school's out

Do kids yell that tired old rhyme on the last day of school anymore? In case you're wondering, it ends with "teacher let the monkeys out."

Well, the teachers of District 58 are indeed letting the mon...students out, because today is the last day of school at Downers Grove elementary and middle schools. Classes resume on August 24.
