Former DGPD Sergeants Open Security Business

Goldstar Security Services Inc. handles a variety of tasks including event security and traffic control.

With more than 60 years combined experience in law enforcement, two retired Downers Grove police sergeants are embarking on a new career which allows them to continue doing what they do best.

Dominic Scalzetti and Kevin Groce, who retired from the Downers Grove Police Department last fall, have launched Goldstar Security Services Inc. “I’m too young to be retired,” said Scalzetti, who had logged almost 32 years with the department, but has energy and ambition to spare.

Goldstar Security will be jointly operated by Scalzetti and Groce, and will utilize the expertise of other retired and off-duty law enforcement professionals when needed. The company will specialize in building, premise and event security, traffic control and consulting for commercial, residential, industrial and construction sites. Scalzetti and Groce also will work towards receiving their private investigators’ licenses so that they can serve subpoenas, carry out surveillances, provide personal protection and more.

The business partners had discussed starting such a company well before they approached retirement. “After 9/11, we thought there would be a market for security,” Scalzetti said.

“Now’s a good time to get into this,” Groce said. “People are conscious of security issues that they weren’t conscious of years ago. With terrorism threats and security issues, people want to make sure they’re in a safe environment to conduct business and affairs.”

With their extensive law enforcement backgrounds, both men are well-qualified to run the company. Groce has an associate's degree in criminal justice, a bachelor's degree in behavioral science and a master's degree in public safety administration. Both men served as detectives and SWAT team members while with the DGPD.

“One of our greatest strengths is that we’re able to deal with people,” Groce said. “We know how to deal with people, and are able to communicate with people under stressful circumstances. We know what people are concerned with; know what types of things need to be addressed. Those things are important.”

In addition to their firm, Scalzetti and Groce are both working for the Chicago White Sox, providing security for approximately 10 games each month. They also work in traffic control for St. Joseph Catholic Church on Sunday mornings.

Scalzetti said his hope is for Goldstar Security Services Inc. to grow. “If we run it right and stay true to how we want to run it as a professional company, we want to have good employees working for us, I think the company can grow, can be successful.”
