Your daily digest for Downers Grove

Hot, hot, hot

Heat indexes could reach 102 degrees today as the high approaches 91 degrees, according to the National Weather Service. The heat and lack of rain is causing gardens to droop around town and there is but a 50 percent chance that showers and thunderstorms could bring relief today. Don't look for relief from the breezes, either. They'll be calm at 5 mph from the northwest.

Biggert responds to latest jobs report

U.S. Rep. Judy Biggert responded Friday to the Department of Labor's report that the national unemployment rate had increased to 9.2 percent:

“American businesses—not government spending—create jobs," Biggert said in a press release. "Today’s disappointing jobs report marks the 29thmonth in a row that unemployment has remained over 8 percent. We don’t need a 30th reminder that Washington’s unwillingness to deal with the debt has drained our economy of confidence and frozen the job market.

"It’s past time to move ahead on policies that will cut energy costs, open foreign markets to American-made goods, lift tax and regulatory burdens on small businesses, and reform the patent process to speed innovation. American workers have made it clear that jobs must be our top priority, and that requires leadership from the White House and a willingness to work together to cut spending. I and my House colleagues stand ready to get it done, and I hope the President’s actions during this month’s negotiations reflect the same attitude.”
