Enough already

Another blazing day is on tap, with high temps near 96 degrees and heat index values as high as 107 degrees, according to the National Weather Service. Perhaps the 10 mph breezes and 15 mph gusts will offer a little relief—that and the 30 percent chance of rain. Tonight's chances of showers and thunderstorms increase to 40 percent, with lows of about 74 degrees.

Park Board meets tonight

The Park Board is expected to approve a raft of contracts and change orders for the McCollum Park renovation projects, as well as a new name for the newly built Fishel Park Band Shell. The board meets at 7 p.m. in the Village Council Chambers at Village Hall, 801 Burlington Ave. The meeting also will be telecast on Channel 6.

The Downers Grove Library Foundation continues to accept donations for its garden walk. The walk, located at the corner of Forest Avenue and Curtiss Street, features commemorative bricks and beautiful landscaping. Bricks ordered by September 1 will be installed this fall as weather permits.

Safety town returns

Registration is open for Safety Town, the nationally recognized children's safety education class sponsored by the Downers Grove Junior Women's Club, the Downers Grove Park District and the Downers Grove Police Department.

A mini safety town complete with kid-sizes buildings, signs and streets and sidewalks helps kids learn pedestrian, passenger and home safety as they ride big wheel bikes throughout the "town" at the Recreation Center. Participants must be five years old by September 1. Class number is 118800-03.
