Pedestrian Fatally Struck by Train (UPDATE 2:22pm)

On November 9, 2011 at approximately 6:58 p.m. the Downers Grove Police Department responded to a report of a subject that was struck by a train at the Main Street BNSF railroad crossing.

The preliminary investigation indicates that a female subject walked around the crossing gates while a Metra commuter train was stopped just east of Main Street on track #1, the northern most tracks. The female subject had been walking southbound when she stopped, and was standing between tracks #1 and track #2. The victim was then struck by a westbound BNSF freight train. the BNSF freight train was traveling at 40 mph in a 50 mph zone when the collission occured. The 51-year-old Joliet resident was pronounced dead at the scene. Witnesses stated that the crossing gates were down and functioning properly at the time of the accident.

The accident investigation is ongoing and at this time the police department is not releasing the victim's name pending formal notification of family members.

According to the Chicago Tribune, a woman walking south on Main street this evening around 7 p.m. was struck by a westbound train after she went around the lowered gate and behind a stopped eastbound train before being hit by a westbound train.
