Severe Thunderstorm, Flood Watch in Effect for Downers Grove

Severe weather could continue into Thursday, with the risk of strong storms, flash flooding and isolated tornadoes.

The National Weather Service has issued a severe thunderstorm watch for the Downers Grove area, effective until 5 p.m. Wednesday.

According to the NWS, some storms may produce hail, heavy rainfall and wind gusts in excess of 60 mph.

As a warm front moves in Wednesday afternoon, thunderstorms are expected to develop and could become severe this afternoon and tonight. Some of the stronger storms could create the potential for an isolated tornado Wednesday afternoon and evening, the NWS said.

Several rounds of heavy storms will continue through Thursday, creating the potential for “significant flooding,” according to the NSW.

The Joliet Weather Center reported a flood watch Wednesday through Friday cross most of Illinois.

“Please be aware that flash flooding can occur very quickly and you should always avoid driving trough any area of ponding,” the center said on its Facebook page. “The storm prediction center also has the Joliet Area under a slight risk of severe thunderstorms today and tomorrow so any storm does have the potential to intensify quickly to severe levels

“ … Be prepared with your NOAA weather radios for possible watches and warnings and as always we will update this page, as well as our twitter page, as often as needed. Grab your umbrellas, make sure your sump pump is working and get ready for some active weather, my friends.”
