GOP Challenger Calls Out Sandack's Gay-Marriage Record

State Rep. Ron Sandack defended accepting donations from groups on both sides of the same-sex marriage issue, according to a report.

A challenger from his own party is calling out Republican State Rep. Ron Sandack over his endorsement of the gay marriage bill, according to a media report.

Keith Matune, who is a member of the District 99 high school board and a Downers Grove resident, is running against the incumbent Sandack for the 81st District House seat, the Chicago Tribune reports.

Matune wants Sandack to return campaign donations he received from groups that lobbied on both sides of the same-sex marriage issue, according to the report. He called accepting and keeping the money “basically cronyism.”

Sandack believes there is nothing improper about accepting the donations from groups who want to participate in the political process, and said he isn’t a “bought-and-sold item,” according to the Trib report.

The 81st District represents parts of Bolingbrook, Downers Grove, Naperville, Lisle, Darien, Westmont and Woodridge.

I've gotten several robo calls from a "pro-family" group that isn't happy with the fact that Sandack said during the last campaign that he was against same-sex marriage, then wound up voting for same-sex marriage. By the same token, it does appear that groups on either side of the issue were trying to buy Sandack's vote. But, it looks as if there were 10,000 more reasons for Sandack to vote for same-sex marriage, based on the contributions he received.

It's really not surprising that Mr. Matune would attack Mr. Sandack on the SSM issue. Given the recent news stories about arrest, lies, mugshots and attempts to change his newspaper questionnaire answers, I suspect that Mr. Matune will say just about anything. I guess the honesty portion of his moral compass never developed. But don't take my word for it... http://capitolfax.com/2014/01/14/the-curious-case-of-keith-matune/

Thanks for sharing UoCDoc. Nothing more than sensationalism here. Distracting with a resolved social issue. Lets focus on current ones.

I don't like Matune saying that Sandack isn't a real Republican. I know plenty of Republicans who support same-sex marriage, just as I know plenty of Democrats who oppose same-sex marriage. It's an issue that cuts across party lines. It's one thing to criticize a candidate for changing his position, especially if it appears that the change was influenced by campaign contributions. But, to say that Sandack isn't a real Republican is an insult to loyal Republicans who, while conservative on tax and spending issues, are moderate on social issues. I still think it's a valid to question Sandack's judgment, as Mayor of Downers Grove, in terminating former Village Manager Cara Pavlicek for cause. Considering the time and money wasted by the Village, including a settlement and Ms. Pavlicek's attorney fees, what other boneheaded ideas will Ron have in the future? I think it's also fair to question how committed Ron is to pension refor, considering that he represents a Teamsters pension fund in his law practice. With the large number of municipal employees in Illinois that the Teamsters represent, one would assume the Teamsters have a different position on pension reform.
