Spring Cleaning for a Cause-Friends of DG Paramedic/Firefighter Host a Fundraising Event

A community-wide garage sale will be held at Fishel Park in Downers Grove on May 10th. All proceeds from sales at the event will support the family of Kevin O'Leary, a Downers Grove paramedic/firefighter who is incurring excessive expenses associated with caring for a medically-fragile foster-to-adopt child.

Downers Grove paramedic/firefighter Joel Mains who is helping to coordinate the initiative on behalf of his friend and co-worker explained. "Kevin has depleted his family leave as the result of taking time off to help his wife care for this child and their other young children. Any time he takes off from now on, is unpaid and the family is already facing financial challenges,"

Joel's wife Kathi Hurst is heading up the event, which she said, is an easy way for people to support the O'Learys while simultaneously doing their spring cleaning. "People want to help the family and this is a great way to do so. We're looking forward to having some amazing items for sale," she said. "This will include power tools, bikes, books, clothing and more."

Event coordinators are seeking assistance in a couple of ways. Donations of gently used items for sale will be gratefully accepted on the morning of May 10th beginning at 7 a.m. at Fishel Park. Donors are being asked to mark sale prices on the items being donated. All inventory left at the end of the sale will be donated to charity. If donors do not want that to happen, they are being asked to return at 5 p.m. to retrieve their items.

Most importantly, please plan on shopping with us that day, and helping to support this worthy cause. Please share information about the garage sale with your friends and family. We will only be able to accept cash for transactions.
