It’s been said that laughter is the best medicine, and a group of Midwestern University students are finding out just how true that statement can be. Students studying clinical psychology on the Downers Grove Campus learn improvisational theater techniques in order to make them better healthcare professionals upon graduation.
As a culmination of their improv studies, the students perform in an annual show sponsored by the Behavioral Medicine Club at the University. Community members can see the students in action at the Improvisational Show on Saturday, May 3rd on the Downers Grove Campus at 555 31st Ave in the Hyde Atrium. Doors open for this free event at 6:30 pm and the show starts at 7:00 pm. A free-will donation will benefit charitable organizations including Wounded Warriors, Autism Speaks, and Planting Possibilities.
The improv exercises help students learn useful communication techniques and contribute to their development as clinicians by making them better listeners, teaching them how to stay in the present moment, and by helping them tune into the nonverbal aspects of a conversation.
