1 Killed, Trooper Injured in Fiery Crash on I-88

A 39-year-old father and toll collector died in a fatal crash Monday night. The Illinois state police officer is expected to survive. Both had responded to help a broken down truck.

A deadly crash on Interstate 88 in Aurora left one tollway worker dead and severely injured a state trooper who had stopped to help a broken down truck, the Chicago Tribunereports.

A semi heading east at around 9:45 p.m. Monday near Eola Road struck the trooper's car, the stalled semi and the toll collector's car after they had stopped to help, according to the report.

Vincent Petrella, a 39-year-old father and toll collector, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the report.

Two dozen Illinois state police cars escorted the injured trooper to Loyola hospital in Maywood, according to the report. He is expected to survive.

All vehicles involved burst into flames, the Tribune reports.
