$14K in Copper-Heavy Railroad Equipment Stolen: Police Blotter

Downers Grove police reports, Sept. 30

About $14,000 in electronic railroad signal parts were taken in Downers Grove, according to police.

An officer at about 10 a.m. Sept. 30 reported to Walnut and Burlington avenues where four cargo shipping containers were located. The railroad signal components were in these containers, and the parts had a high copper content, according to a police report.

The burglary happened sometime since July 1, a Burlington Northern Santa Fe police officer said.

"All the containers were secured with pad locks, which were removed by what they believed was the use of a grinder," the report said. "The reason for the report delay is that the property has sat dormant due to a job delay that would have used the components."

The shipping containers are in a secluded area about 22 yards north of the railroad tracks that spread along Burlington at Walnut, the report said.

Damage to the four cargo containers was estimated at $1,000 each, and damage to three padlocks was valued at $300 each, according to the report. Burlington Northern Santa Fe police will conduct an investigation.

There was no witness or suspect information. A complaint will be signed.
