Downers Grove police reports, Aug. 19

$20K Jewelry Theft

A tray of 12 rings worth a total of $20,000 was reported stolen from a business on the 1200 block of 75th Street. The incident occurred sometime between 4 p.m. and 4:30 p.m., according to a police report. The thieves appear to be a couple who entered the store after walking westbound from Lemont Road, according to a police report.

The couple stood by the display cabinet to the left of the store entrance. The male then sat down in a chair next to the cabinet while the female had one of the store employees show her some of the necklaces inside the display cabinet.

The female tried on several of the necklaces and at one point complained of pinching while one of the necklaces was placed on her.

"(The employee) believes that this is when the male subject reached over the counter and opened the unlocked sliding door of the display cabinet," the police report said. "He then removed a white tray which contained 12 (twelve) rings from inside the display cabinet."

The male then left the store and walked eastbound towards Lemont Road. The female told the employee that she needed to get more cash and left the store eastbound towards Lemont Road. The employee did not see the couple enter the vehicle, and he or she did not realize the items were gone until about an hour after the subjects left the store.

The couple was described as black and 5'8", according to the report. The man had a thin build and was wearing a loose-fitting button-up shirt and light-colored clothing.
