Attempted Car Break-In and Retail Theft in Downers

The following incidents and arrests were reported by the Downers Grove Police Department

Attempted car break-in

Someone attempted to break into a car at Fairview Baptist home, 250 Village Drive between 7:30 a.m. and 7:30 p.m. Aug. 5. The owner found weather stripping around the door hanging, a rearview mirror removed from its window mount and paint scratches on the door. Police believe a long object was used in an attempt to gain entry to the car, causing $100 in estimated damage. Nothing was missing from the car.

Grocery cart taken

A grocery cart valued at $75 was taken from the Downers Grove Farmer’s Market, 1000 Burlington Ave. around 11:45 a.m. Aug. 6. Witnesses say the offender took the cart from the market and boarded an eastbound Metra train.

Retail theft reported at Kohl’s

Nicole M. Turza, 19, of Glen Ellyn was charged with retail theft after allegedly taking items valued at $114.45 from Kohl’s, 2920 Finley Road around 5 p.m. Aug. 6. A loss prevention employee observed Turza allegedly put sunglasses, jewelry and clothing into her purse while walking throughout the store. Turza then returned a pair of shoes and exited the store without paying for the items in her purse. Police said she apologized and stated she did not come to the store with the intent to steal.

Gym shoes taken from front porch

A pair of Nike shoes valued at $120 was taken from the front porch of a home in the 400 block of Wilson Avenue between 1:15 p.m. Aug. 6 and 6:30 a.m. Aug. 7. An officer on residential patrol was stopped by the resident who wanted to document the theft in case he sees someone wearing the shoes.

Locker theft at gym

A wallet containing $200 in cash, a driver’s license and seven credit cards was among items taken from a locker at the YMCA, 711 59th Street between 1:15 p.m. and 3:04 p.m. Aug. 7. The owner locked the wallet, pants and keys in a locker but found the door ajar when he returned and discovered the items missing. Police said the lock did not work properly and a crease was found near the lock area.

Retail theft at electronics store

Soleadad Rodriguez, 35, of Glen Ellyn was charged with retail theft after allegedly taking a Power Miracle wrist band valued at $7.99 and a pack of batteries valued at $5.89 from Fry’s Electronics, 3300 Finley Road around 7 p.m. Aug. 7. An employee at the store observed Rodriguez allegedly take the wrist band and leave the store. Rodriguez was also carrying a pack of batteries she had not paid for when she was stopped by the employee.
