Chicago Man Charged with Assault, Battery, DUI after Altercation in Parking Lot

Yelton Cales is a registered sex offender and brother of Stacy Peterson.

Two men were accosted in the parking lot of Best Buy, 7401 Lemont Road, March 7 by a Chicago man who told them he had a gun.

The man, Yelton Earl Cales, 31, of Chicago, was charged with two counts of assault, one count of battery and driving under the influence following the altercation. No gun was found on Cales or in his vehicle, police said.

Cales is the brother of Stacy Peterson, Downers Grove Police said. Her husband Drew Peterson, a former Bolingbrook police sergeant, is a suspect in her 2007 disappearance. Cales also is a registered child sex offender and previous resident of Downers Grove.

"In the past he did register with us as a sex offender living in Downers Grove, although he currently does not live here," said Sgt. David Bormann of the Downers Grove Police Dept.

Cales allegedly sped past two men walking to their car in the Best Buy parking lot at 7:45 p.m. Monday, almost hitting them as he backed into a handicapped stall, according to police. One of the men yelled “Watch it” to Cales, who responded with an obscenity and asked what they were going to do about it.

After parking in another spot, Cales came up behind the men and said, “I got a .380” as he reached into his waistband and began to pull out a black object, police said. Cales then allegedly spit on one of the men, who left the area and called police.

Police responding to the call located Cales, who complied when told to get down to the ground where he was handcuffed. No gun was located on Cales or in the vehicle. Cales was charged and released on bond with an April court date.
