Downers Grove police reports, June 18-20

THURSDAY, JUNE 20

Push and Shove

Two men got into a verbal altercation that briefly turned physical at a business on the 1400 block of Butterfield Road. The man who contacted police said at about 1:55 p.m. he drove around a vehicle driven by a woman who was stopped in the roadway of the business parking lot. After he entered the store, another man approached him and yelled that he almost hit his wife's car by driving recklessly. Their verbal exchange ended with the second man pushing the first backwards, causing him to almost fall.

The second man gave a different account, saying that the first man became angry with him, kicked him in the leg and pushed him first. An assistant manager told police that she saw the second man push the first man, but at this point the first man said he did not want any further police assistance. The men apologized to each other, shook hands and went their separate ways, the report said.

Man Hostile About Dog

A receptionist at an animal hospital on the 2500 block of Warrenville Road was alarmed and disturbed by a client's phone call, police said. The client at about 4:30 p.m. called to check on a tan pitbull mix that he gave to a technician in April. The dog was recently put to sleep due to his violent behavior, according to a police report.

When the receptionist denied his request for information because he was no longer the dog's owner, the client said, "If I don't get an answer now, then I will come in and get an answer and I better not find out the dog was put down," the police report said.

The hospital did not press charges and only wanted the incident documented. The client's business at the hospital was still welcome, the report said.

Cannabis Possession

Robert J. Hickok, 18, of the 6800 block of Plymouth, Downers Grove, was charged with possession of cannabis following an investigation on the 7200 block of Powell. At 8:27 p.m. an officer noticed a blue Oldsmobile with four people inside parked at Hawkins and Powell in an unusual area. The officer spoke to all four people individually outside of the car by his police truck. They all said that Hickok went to go check out a BBQ at a nearby house, but then left and told them they would not like the people there.

The female driver consented to a search of her car, and the officer found a black knapsack pushed under the front passenger seat from the backseat. Inside was a jar of cannabis, packaged cannabis, a digital scale and small baggies, all of which the officer described as a dealer's kit.

The officer went to talk to the owner of the nearby home, and was told that Hickok sold cannabis to someone else in the house. After some more questioning of Hickok, he was taken to the Downers Grove Police Department. He was charged and released on an I-bond with an Aug.12 court date in Wheaton.

Man Reports Sweepstakes Scam

A resident received an envelope that contained a Visa/Green Dot debit card and then later got a phone call about winning a sweepstakes. The caller mentioned the debit card and said it was worth $3,000, according to a police report. The caller told the man to send $40 via a MoneyGram purchase at Wal-Mart, and then send it to an address in the Caribbean. In exchange for the $40, the man would receive the PIN number for the card to get the $3,000. The resident reported the incident, and police entered the card into evidence.
