Drug Possession, Car Burglaries, Retail Theft: Police Blotter

Downers Grove police reports, Oct. 8-12.

FRIDAY, OCT. 12

Possession of Drug Equipment

Shawn M. Holder, 26, of the 600 block of River Street in Aurora, was arrested around 2:59 a.m. in the 2100 block of Midhurst Road, police said.

An officer was sent to Midhurst Road for a suspicious vehicle report, police said. When the officer arrived, he found a vehicle registered to Holder.

A computer check indicated a warrant was issued for Holder on a charge of failure to appear, police said. The officer searched Holder, and found a brown one-hitter box, an item of drug paraphernalia, according to the report.

Holder was charged with unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia, and was issued a Nov. 21 court date.

THURSDAY, OCT. 11

Possession of Marijuana

William J. Vrtis, 23, of 212 Lincoln Ave. in Downers Grove, was arrested around 9:53 p.m. near Hitchcock and Walnut avenues, police said.

The arresting officer said stopped Vrtis after watching him run a stop sign at Curtiss Street and Walnut Avenue. While speaking with Vrtis, the officer detected an odor of marijuana coming from inside the vehicle, according to the report.

A second officer arrived and police proceeded to search the vehicle. A prescription pill bottle containing a green, leafy substance was found, police said.

Vrtis was charged with possession of cannabis and possession of drug paraphernalia, and was cited with disobeying a stop sign, police said. He was issued a Nov. 14 court date.

WEDNESDAY, OCT. 10

Car Burglaries on Florence Avenue

A car was burglarized overnight in the 7600 block of Florence Avenue, police said. About $5 in loose change was stolen.

While officers spoke to the first victim, a neighbor drove by and said her car had also been burglarized overnight. A lime green and white Coach wristlet was stolen, along with $10 cash.

Later that day, police received a third car burglary report from a resident of Florence Avenue. According to the report, the victim told police the car door was slightly ajar and items were tossed about, but nothing was missing.

Theft on Katrine Avenue

A copper buss bar was stolen form a communication tower in the 5200 block of Katrine Avenue sometime between noon on Aug. 20 and 10:45 a.m. on Oct. 10, police said.

TUESDAY, OCT. 9

Man Attempts to Steal Bottle of Vodka

Police were called to a business in the 0-50 block of Ogden Avenue around 3:55 p.m. for a retail theft report. A loss prevention officer told police he observed a man take a bottle of vodka, place it in his jacket and leave the store without paying for it. The man was stopped by the officer, and was cooperative, police said.The loss prevention officer did not press charges, but asked that the man be trespassed from the store.

MONDAY, OCT. 8

Car Burglary on Finley Road

A car was burglarized outside a business in the 3200 block of Finley Road sometime between 6:45 p.m. and 7:45 p.m., police said. Stolen items included a fall jacket, Samsung smart phone, Blackberry smart phone, wallet, driver's license and multiple credit cards.
