Gun-Toting Robbers Strike Downers Grove in Weekend Robberies

Police are investigating two robberies that occurred this past weekend in latest rash of incidents reported in area the past two weeks.

A man wearing a white handkerchief over his face and displaying a handgun unsuccessfully tried to force his way into a room and rob a hotel guest, in the first of two armed robberies that occurred over the weekend.

Downers Grove Police responded to an attempted armed robbery of a guest at the Sybaris Pool Suites at 600 Ogden Ave. around 2 a.m. Saturday.

The victim told police that a man tried to force his way into his room. The suspect brandished a small handgun during a brief struggle, then fled the area on foot.

He is described a 5-foot-8-inches tall with dark skin, and wearing blue jeans and a dark coat.

At approximately 11:20 p.m. Sunday, a woman was approached by two individuals armed with handguns in the 4100 block of Sterling Road. A brief struggle ensued and the woman was struck in the head by one suspect, while the other took her cell phone.

Both left the area on foot. The suspects are described as black males. Police said the woman was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

The Downers Grove incidents are the latest in a string of armed robberies or armed individuals accosting residents reported in the area during the past two weeks.

Downers Grove Police spokesman, Lt. Michael Willison, said that it was not immediately clear if the past weekend’s incidents were connected to incidents in Darien and Woodridge, Trib Local reported.

"At this time, we do not rule it out, but there are several discrepancies," Willison told the paper.
