I-88 Exit Ramp to I-290 to Close Overnight Twice This Week

Pre-Halloween Traffic Nightmare? The posted detour will direct westbound traffic to the Mannheim Road interchange from at 10 p.m. Tuesday to 5 a.m. Wednesday and 10 a.m. Thursday to 5 a.m. Friday.

The ramp carrying traffic from the eastbound Reagan Memorial Tollway (I-88) to westbound I-290 is scheduled to close overnight this week and traffic detoured for pavement resurfacing.

Ramp closures are scheduled from 10 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 30, until 5 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 31, and from 10 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 1, until 5 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 2.

The detour will route traffic east on I-88 to I-290, where drivers will be directed to exit at Mannheim Road north, then re-enter via the westbound I-290 entrance ramp.

Closure of the ramp is necessary to complete pavement resurfacing because the ramp is not wide enough to accommodate a work zone while maintaining traffic, the Illinois Tollway said in a press release.

The work is being done during overnight hours to minimize the impact to commuter traffic. The work is being completed as part of the $112.6 million Central Tri-State Tollway (I-294) Resurfacing Project to extend the life of the roadway and provide a new, smooth surface.

Work Zone Safety

A 45 mph speed limit is in effect 24/7 in all construction zones, whether or not workers are present. Drivers should continue to watch for changing traffic patterns and use caution at all times. Illinois State Police have zero tolerance for drivers speeding in work zones. The minimum penalty for speeding in a work zone is $375. Posted signs advise drivers of a $10,000 fine and 14-year jail sentence for hitting a roadway worker.
