Police: $30K in Jewelry Taken From Downtown Downers Grove Business

As the village was getting flooded, someone broke into a jewelry store and left with numerous items. Here are more details.

Several pieces of jewelry worth at least $30,000 total were taken recently from a downtown Downers Grove business, according to police.

The burglary occurred just before 4:21 a.m. Thursday, when a tripped alarm sent police to a store on the 5100 block of Main Street. A nearby officer arrived within 60 seconds and saw that the front glass door was broken.

Three more officers and a sergeant arrived to the business four minutes later. The store was declared safe at 4:40 a.m. The store manager has to do a complete inventory, but gave an initial estimated loss of $30,000 to $35,000 in jewelry.

Police surrounded the store when they arrived but there was no one inside. An evidence technician was dispatched to the store at 5:12 a.m. He processed the scene and gathered evidence, which was not detailed in the initial police report.

The case will be forwarded to the department's investigations unit. The store will send them a complete inventory of the jewelry stolen.

Police began their investigation into the burglary as a historic flooding event was underway in the village and across the Chicago area. Several roads and underpasses were underwater and were impassable by daylight.

The store is also located less than a block from a Citibank that was robbed on April 10.
