Man Pretends to Carry Gun to Avoid Fight

Downers Grove Police were called to Curtiss and Main streets around 1 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 29, after getting reports of a man with a gun, but said they found no evidence of a weapon when they arrived.

A woman flagged down a police officer in downtown Downers Grove, and said she was approached by a white man in a gray T-shirt, who told her he was armed with a gun. The woman pointed to the man, who was standing on Curtiss Street, about 40 feet east of Main Street, police said.

The man, whole police said was drunk, did not have a weapon in his possession. He told officers he pretending to have a gun to avoid a physical altercation with two other men, who approached him at the corner of Curtiss and Main streets and said they wanted to fight.

The two men who allegedly wanted to fight told officers they were the ones who were approached, according to the report.

Police said they searched the first man's vehicle, and were unable to locate a weapon.

The woman told police she did not wish to file any complaints because the man appeared to be intoxicated. Taxi cabs were also called for the other two men, who appeared to be intoxicated as well, police said.

Stolen PlayStation 3

A Sony PlayStation 3 was stolen from a display in Rent-a-Center, 1220 75th St., around 1:45 p.m., police said.

Phone Scam

A woman contacted the Downers Grove Police Department regarding a phone scam. She said she received a call from an unknown person, who claimed the woman won $38.5 million and a Mercedes-Benz. The woman was instructed to go to the nearest Walmart to get a gift card for $500, and provide the pin number when the company calls back. 

Car Burglary on Finley Road

A car was burglarized in a parking lot in the 3200 block of Finley Road between 10:30 p.m. and 11:30 p.m., police said. A Coach purse valued at $380 was stolen, as well as multiple credit cards, an iPad and gift cards.

FRIDAY, SEPT. 28

Theft on Highland Avenue

A wallet was stolen from a purse in a business located in the 2900 block of Highland Avenue, police said.

A woman told police someone stole her wallet from a shopping cart while she wasn't looking. The wallet contained $200 cash, credit cards, a driver's license and various papers, police said.

Public Urination

Michael E. Hardin, 49, of the 700 block of Liberty St. in Wheaton, was arrested around 6:50 p.m. in the 4900 block of Washington Street, police said.

An officer said he observed Hardin urinating near an evergreen tree. He was charged with disorderly conduct/urinating in public, police said.

THURSDAY, SEPT. 27

DUI

Steven R. Bonanno, 48, of the 1900 block of Wisconsin in Downers Grove, was arrested around 2:16 a.m. near Belmont Road and Grant Street, police said. He was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, and was cited for failure to signal. He was issued an Oct. 24 court date.
