A security guard shot a robbery suspect Sunday at C.D. Peacock Jewelers in the Oakbrook Center mall, according to media reports.

Two other men involved in the robbery were still at large Sunday evening, CLTV reports. The incident occurred at about 3:45 p.m. Sunday, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.

One of the men used a hammer to break a glass case inside the store, the Chicago Tribune reports. A security guard asked the man to drop the hammer, but the man instead approached him, Oak Brook Police Chief James R. Kruger Jr. told the Tribune. That's when the security guard shot at the man in the abdomen.

The wounded man was transported to a hospital, but the two others fled the scene in a stolen black Jeep Liberty belonging to a mall employee, CLTV's story said.

The two men were last seen headed west on 22nd Street, the Daily Herald reports. The suspects are described as black males in their late 20s or early 30s; one is heavyset and the other has a heavy beard, according to the Herald.

Although there were conflicting reports about whether the mall was on lockdown following the robbery, Patch reader Joe Calderone did not see people leave the stores. He was shopping in Oak Brook Sunday when he heard about a shooting.

"I continued shopping, walked past about 30-45 minutes later and a police officer had the area still crime-scened off but said it was 'safe' in the mall," Calderone said in an e-mail. "Most stores were still locked down."

The man who was shot underwent surgery at Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove, the Herald's story said. No other injuries were reported during the incident, according to CLTV.
