Man Walks into Best Buy, Takes iMac, Xbox 360

Burglary from motor vehicle, criminal damage to state-supported property among repots.

The following incidents and arrests were reported by the Downers Grove Police Department:

Retail Theft

A man walked into the Best Buy on Butterfield on January 9 and ultimately stole an Apple iMac computer valued at $1,124 and a Xbox 360 valued at $299. The man walked in, picked up the boxes, and tried to exit the store. When stopped and told he needed to produce a receipt to leave the store he told the employee his wife had the receipt and she was in the bathroom. The man waited until the exit security were distracted and then took off.

Juan Martinez, 23 of 1533 S. Lombard Ave in Cicero, was charged with one count of retail theft after allegedly attempting to steal an electric meter valued at $129 from Fry's Electronics on January 9.

Ivailo Mahleliiski, 23 of 117 E. Quincy Street in Westmont, and Mazvydas Deltuva, 20 of 12b Kingery Quarter in Willowbrook, were each charged with retail theft after allegedly attempting to steal a hard drive and a computer security device from Fry's Electronics on January 4. Both were observed by Loss Prevention reps putting the items under their jackets, and when police first approached Mahleliiski he dropped one of the items on the ground and attempted to take off running.

Theft Under $500

A cashier was scammed into giving a customer an additional $220 the customer wasn't entitled to at Savers on Highland December 31. The customer paid for three small items separately, each with $20 bills, and while cashier was completing transaction, the customer pulled out more money and started asking for change to be made. The cashier became confused and ultimately gave the male $220 in additional money. The customer appeared to be working with two other people, a man and a woman, who distracted the store manager and other customers during the transaction.

An iTunes gift card worth $20 and $163 in cash were stolen from a locker of someone exercising at Blast Fitness on 75th on January 7.

A baby Jesus was stolen from a nativity scene in the front yard of a residence in the 300 block of Gierz Street sometime between January 8 and January 10. Baby Jesus was valued at $25.

A woman in her 60s with reddish orange hair and extremely red lipstick attempted to pay only $6 for a sub sandwich she ordered from Subway on Main Street on January 10 that cost $10.28. When told she had to pay the rest, the woman reportedly said “you're stupid, it's too much money, I'll come back tomorrow and give you the rest,” put down the $6, grabbed the sandwich and exited the building.

A woman shopping in Savers on Highland on January 9 was distracted by one male while another took her wallet. The stolen value of the wallet and its contents stolen was estimated at $175.

Criminal Damage to State Supported Property

A recently planted red maple tree at Hillcrest school was damaged sometime between January 6 and January 9. The damage was estimated at $200.

Burglary From Motor Vehicle

A wallet was stolen from a SUV parked in a driveway in the 1500 block of Brunette Drive sometime between January 8 and January 9. The owner believed the car doors were locked, but there were no signs of forced entry. The stolen property was valued at $508.

Burglary From Motor Vehicle (attempt)

A complainant noticed a small pry mark on top of the rear passenger door frame and a puncture mark on the weather strip inside the frame at the same spot as the pry mark while the car was parked at the Red Roof Inn sometime overnight on January 9.

Retail Theft, Battery

A Loss Prevention rep observed a male put items into his hoodie at Fry's Electronics on January 10 and attempt to leave without paying for the items. When the store employee confronted the male in the inner vestibule by the front door, a struggle ensued and the store employee was hit in the face, and the offender got away.
