Car, home windows shattered by tossed landscape stones

The following incidents and arrests were reported by the Downers Grove Police Department:

Bicycle stolen from Main Street depot

A Schwinn mountain bike was taken from the Main Street depot, 1001 Warren Ave., between 12:45 p.m. and 3:45 p.m. June 10. The bike’s owner said he left the bike unlocked in a rack near the depot while he bowled at the Tivoli.

Rock shatters car windshield

The windshield of a car parked in the 1800 block of Concord Drive was shattered between 10 p.m. June 10 and 6:58 a.m. June 11. Police said a landscape stone, possibly from a neighbor’s yard, was found resting on the windshield. Damage was estimated at $300.

House window shattered

A 2-foot-by-4-foot double-pane window at a home in the 6700 block of Bunker Hill Circle was shattered between 2:30 a.m. and 7:30 a.m. June 11. The homeowner heard a noise and discovered a landscape stone had been thrown at the window. He reported seeing two teens walking from the rear of a neighbor’s house when he went out to investigate. Damage was estimated at $400.

Woman takes batteries from toy store

Shawntell M. Pineda, 32, of Chicago was charged with retail theft after allegedly taking 23 packages of Duracell AA batteries valued at $311.76 from Toys R Us, 1540 75thSt. at about 4 p.m. June 11.

A store security employee observed Pineda enter the store, grab a cart and place the batteries and a t-shirt in her cart. The employee followed Pineda to the back of the store, where Pineda allegedly place the batteries in her purse before walking to the front of the store, leaving the cart and t-shirt behind.

The employee stopped Pineda outside the store and retrieved the batteries from her purse, which had been lined with foil in an effort to evade the store's theft detection devices.

Asked by police if she had anything to say about the allegations of theft, Pineda replied “Ya, I did it,” according to the report. After being placed into custody Pineda told police she took the items because she has a baby and no job.

Power washer and saw taken from garage

A Dewalt power washer and Skil concrete saw valued at $1,999.99 were taken from an unattached garage in the 5900 block of Chase Avenue between 9:30 p.m. June 10 and 7:30 a.m. June 11. The home and garage, which are currently unoccupied, are being remodeled.

The garage was entered by a side door, which had been pried open, possibly by a straight slot screwdriver, according to police. The electric door unit had been unplugged. Damage to the door and locks was estimated at $100.

Louisiana man charged with soliciting without a permit

James R. Reed, 35, of New Iberia, LA, was charged with commercial solicitation without a permit after police responded to a June 11 complaint of soliciting in the area of Washington and 55th streets.

An officer found Reed talking with a resident in the 5400 block of Washington Street, attempting to sell magazines. When asked if he had a Downers Grove permit, Reed said he did not, adding that he thought he was in Western Springs. A prior solicitation complaint involving Reed on Douglas Avenue was noted in the police report. Reed posted $120 bond and was given a court date for the incident.

Tables taken from bar’s outdoor patio

Four wrought iron tables valued at $300 were taken from the patio at Another Round Bar and Grill, 5141 Main St., between 2 a.m. and 2:30 a.m. June 12. The owner said the tables, which had been near Curtiss Avenue, were not on his property and police also failed to locate the tables during a search of the downtown area. 

Cell phone and smokes taken from unlocked car

A Blackberry cell phone valued at $150 and a pack of cigarettes were taken between from an unlocked car in the parking lot of St. Mary’s Church, 4809 Douglas Ave., between 10 a.m. and 11:35 a.m. June 12. The owner said the items were taken from a cup holder in the center console while he attended church services.

AT & T phone box damaged

An AT&T phone box in the 4900 block of Cumnor Road was cracked and left open between 1 p.m. June 5 and 1:30 p.m. June 12. The homeowner, who noticed the damaged box while mowing, told police he does not have AT&T service and that no one had come to his house to service the box. The homeowner told police he would contact AT&T about the damage.

Wallet taken from fitting room

A man told police his wallet containing $5 in cash, credit cards and driver’s license was taken from a fitting room at K&G Men’s Mart, 1524 Butterfield Road between 1:30 p.m. and 2:10 p.m. June 12.

The man said he tried on a pair of suit pants and left his shorts in the fitting room while the store’s tailor marked the pants for alteration. He returned, put on his shorts and when he got to the front of the store he realized his wallet was missing from the back pocket. He told police he returned to the fitting room but did not find his wallet and believes someone entered the fitting room while he was with the tailor.
