Police: Burglary to Motor Vehicle, DUI, Drug Arrests

The Downers Grove Police Department provided Patch with the following police reports from the past week. 

Burglary to Motor Vehicle
Police received a report of a  burglary to a motor vehicle that occurred at Marriott Suites, 1500 Opus Place in Downers Grove, between 7 p.m. on Jan. 23 and 10 a.m. on Jan. 24. A man said he parked his Ford F450 at Marriott Suite and did not lock his doors. He said his work equipment, including a banding tool and a tool bag with hammers, was stolen from the vehicle. The property was valued at $2,200. 

Burglary to Motor Vehicle
A Downers Grove resident told police she was parked at Baked Apple Breakfast Co. restaurant, 1224 Ogden Ave., between 9:30 a.m. and 10:15 a.m. on Feb. 2 when a handicap placard was stolen from her vehicle. She said she realized her handicap vehicle placard was missing after she returned home. She said she had probably left her vehicle unlocked. There were no signs of forced entry. 

Possession of Marijuana 
Downers Grove police pulled over a a 19-year-old Downers Grove man at 63rd and Middaugh around 9 p.m. on Jan. 31. The officer said at the time of the traffic stop he smelled a strong odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle. The officer asked the man if he had been smoking marijuana in the forest preserve lot. Police said the man promptly opened his armrest in the middle console and retrieved a hitter box and a small bag of what he said was marijuana. Patrick C. Heffernan, of  8639 Brookridge Road, was arrested for possession of marijuana and was also cited for obstructed windshield and operating an uninsured motor vehicle. 

DUI Arrest
Police pulled over and arrested Brandi L. Otto of Wetsmont at Franklin and Douglas at 7:18 p.m. on Feb. 3 for DUI Alcohol. She is expected in court at 9 a.m. on March 5 in Wheaton. 

Drug Arrests
A police officer approached a car parked with its headlights on behind an abandoned building at 250 Ogden and asked the driver, whose window was open, if everything was OK. The driver told the officer him and a passenger in the vehicle were just having a cigarette but the officer reported smelling a strong odor of burnt marijuana coming from the vehicle. Police searched the car and found a plastic electronic grinder continuing marijuana. One of the men in the vehicle, Nathan Valtman, 20, of 4227 Florence Ave., was arrested on a warrant. Tanner A. Hampton, 20, of 4227 Florence Ave., was arrested and charged with possession of drug paraphernalia.
