Too Late in the Evening for, "Honey, I'm Home"

LA GRANGE, Feb. 22—Police investigating a call of a possible intruder on the main floor of a home in the 200 block of south Sixth Avenue at about 10:49 p.m. said they found a husband who had gone on a business trip, but turned around midway because of bad road conditions and came home. His wife and daughter had been hiding in an upstairs bedroom.

DOWNERS GROVE, Feb. 19—Items valued at $730 were reported taken at 8:56 p.m. from Jewel-Osco, 1148 Ogden Ave., by a woman identified by a loss prevention employee as responsible for earlier thefts at Jewel stores in Orland Park, Hickory Hills and Oak Lawn. The employee saw the woman place baby formula, four packages of Crest whitening strips, and six  packages of Rogaine into a bag and leave the store without paying. The employee observed her get into a bronze four-door Oldsmobile or Buick  that sped off westbound on Ogden Avenue. Police said an officer responding to the call from that direction did not see the described car. The woman was described as 25 to 40 years old, 5-feet-10-inches and 250 pounds.

LA GRANGE, Feb. 18—Vandalism was reported at about 9:17 p.m.  in the 900 block of south Sixth Avenue where the homeowner said packets of ketchup and hot sauce were all over his front yard, sidewalk and stairs. He said this happened before.

LA GRANGE, Feb. 18—A man living in the 500 block of south Kensington Avenue told police at about 6:36 p.m. that a man came to his door selling something, but would not say what he was selling. The possible solicitor last was seen running east on 48th Street from Kensington. 

Pole-tergust?

LA GRANGE, Feb. 17—A 40-foot flagpole in front of the La Grange Post Office, 121 W. Hillgrove Ave., was reported down on the street at about 1:06 a.m. Police moved the pole and the flag was recovered. The cause of the pole falling down was not given. A U.S. postal inspector was notified about the incident.

Dreaming Under the Influence

ELMHURST, Feb. 16—Richard K. Dean, 40, of Indiana was arrested under state charges for driving under the influence of alcohol after police found him sleeping behind the wheel of his vehicle, which was parked at Extended Stay of America, 551 W. Grand Ave., at 12:11 a.m. Feb. 16. He was taken to the hospital, and later taken to DuPage County Jail.

Robin Hood Would Disapprove

ST. CHARLES, Feb. 16—Someone stole a moneybag containing $250 in donations from the Baker Memorial Church's regular Wednesday night dinner when a volunteer left it unattended for five minutes.

ST. CHARLES, Feb. 14—Diesel fuel was stolen from a semi tractor trailer used by the Northern Illinois Food Bank. A manager at the nonprofit told police that 70-75 gallons of fuel had gone missing from a truck parked on the west-side loading dock. The fuel is valued at $250. Police obtained video of a dark-colored truck that was seen driving southbound on Industrial Drive at about the time the incident is believed to have happened. No arrests have been made.

Employees of the Week

LA GRANGE, Feb. 16—Police received a report of two men “drinking and swearing,” at about 11:17 a.m. in a Mercedes parked in a private parking space behind a condominium in the 900 block of south Eighth Avenue. They were determined to be on a lunch break, talking and eating. A beer can was found in the car, police said. The two men, ages 29 and 49, had to get a ride back to work since police found both of their driver’s licenses were suspended.

LA GRANGE, Feb. 16Burning food set off a fire alarm at about 10:43 a.m. at Trader Joe’s, 25 N. LaGrange Road. The La Grange Fire Department responded.

Caller Subject to Dip Fits

ELMHURST, Feb. 13—A female employee of Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory, 156 N. York Road, received a vulgar phone call at 3:49 p.m. from a man saying he wanted to dip her in 1,000 pounds of chocolate. He also said she should make chocolate molds of various parts of his body. After she hung up, he called right back and said, “I’ll be back.” His phone number came up as “unknown.”

Well I've Never Been to Spain, but I Kinda Like the Music

WHEATON, Feb. 7—A Wheaton resident in the 2100 block of Glencoe Street reported a telephone call from a man who identified himself as her grandson at 11:30 a.m. He said he was in jail in Spain after police caught him with a hitchhiker in possession of drugs. He was asking for $3,000 in bail money. She hung up.

ELMHURST, Feb 4—A resident of the 100 block of Clinton Avenue reported receiving threatening messages on her Facebook page from someone she does not know.
