Retail Theft, Phone Scam, Stolen Vehicle: Police Blotter

Downers Grove police reports, Aug. 26-31.

FRIDAY, AUG. 31

Theft of Labor

Police were called to the Shell gas station, 2205 Ogden Ave., around 2:38 a.m. after an intoxicated customer failed to pay a taxi cab driver the $123 on the meter.

The driver said he picked up a white male—age 30-35, approximately 5-foot-10, thin with short hair—at a casino in Des Plaines. The driver was initially directed to Naperville Road in Naperville, but was then told to "keep going" until they reached Downers Grove. The driver eventually pulled into the Shell lot, at which point the customer exited the vehicle, saying he was going to buy something. He left in an unknown direction.

THURSDAY, AUG. 30

DUI

Lindsay Hagemann, 24, of the 500 block of W. 61st Street in Westmont, was arrested around 12:45 a.m. near 55th Street and Fairview Avenue, police said. She was charged with driving under the influence and improper lane usage. She was issued an Oct. 10 court date.

Vandalism

Several utility control boxes near Fairview and Maple avenues were defaced with black permanent marker around 10 a.m., police said. Shortly after, police found similar graffiti on a stop sign at the corner of Highland Avenue and Franklin Street.

WEDNESDAY, AUG. 29

Suspicious Incident/Phone Scam

A resident in the 4800 block of Cumnor Road said she received several calls between Aug. 23 and Aug. 29 from an individual claiming she had won prize money, police said. The called was described as a male with a Middle Eastern accent.

According to police, the caller told the woman she won $153,000 for paying her bills on time, and asked whether she would be home between 6 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. to collect her winnings. The resident told the caller she was not interested, and the calls have since stopped.

Police said they tried calling the phone number, but got a fast busy signal.

Car Burglary

A car parked near McCollum Park, 6801 Main St., was burglarized around 10:30 p.m., police said. A credit card and two debit cards were stolen from a purse in the front seat.

TUESDAY, AUG. 28

Retail Theft

Police were called to Fry's Electronics, 3300 Finley Road, around 6:07 p.m. for a report of retail theft.

When police arrived, a loss prevention officer said he observed and videotaped a subject later identified as Daniel J. Crowley, 18, of the 100 block of Glen Ellyn, selecting a video game from a shelf, opening the package with a car key and removing a page from the manual that contains a code to activate the game, according to the report.

Police said Crowley then picked up a set of headphones and went to the cash register to pay. He was stopped by the floor manager when he tried to leave the store.

When police arrived and placed Crowley under arrest, they found a glass pipe containing burnt marijuana residue in his front right pants pocket, according to the report. 

Crowley was charged with retail theft and possession of drug equipment. He was issued an Oct. 3 court date.

MONDAY, AUG. 27

Auto Theft

A 2009 sterling gray Ford Flex without license plates was stolen from Kevin's Auto Car, 1650 Ogden Ave. sometime between Aug. 25 and Aug. 27, police said.

An employee at the auto shop told police the car was parked in the west lot with the keys still inside. It had been dropped off on Aug. 23 for mechanical work, according to the report.

DUI

Bronson E. Cignacik, 41, of the 7800 block of Westview in Woodridge, was arrested around 10:10 p.m. near Maple Avenue and Dunham Road, police said. He was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, illegal screeching of tires and operating an uninsured motor vehicle. He was issued an Oct. 3 court date.

SATURDAY, AUG. 25

Possession of Drug Equipment

Michael L. Prymicz, 24, of the 400 block of Craig Place in Lombard, was arrested around 12:21 a.m. in the 4100 block of Fairview Avenue, police said. 

Police stopped Prymicz after he allegedly made an improper turn from eastbound Ogden Avenue to northbound Fairview Avenue, and pulled into a closed business. After smelling burnt marijuana in the vehicle, police conducted a search and found a glass pipe with a small amount of a burnt, leafy substance.

Prymicz was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia and cited for making an improper turn. He was issued a Sept. 26 court date.
