UPDATED: Ruptured Gas Main Closes Belmont Road

Nicor crews complete repair.

Updated: 7:45 p.m.

The four-inch gas main ruptured by construction crews earlier in the day working on the Belmont underpass project was repaired by 5:50 p.m. this evening, the Downers Grove Fire Department reports.

The main, on Haddow Avenue east of Puffer Road, was damaged about 2:30 p.m. today, emitting a loud hiss. The incident shut down Belmont Road for three hours and forced the evacuation of four homes. Commuter Lot J also was closed temporarily.

"The call was upgraded to a general alarm in anticipation of increased levels of gas in the area and the need for more evacuations," said Marsha Giesler, fire department public information officer.

Fire department personnel remained on the scene as Nicor arrived to further assess the incident and repair the leak to the main and the cap, which had been knocked off, she said. The Downers Grove Police Department and five other fire departments assisted.
