The Storage Shed: Suspect's Hideout?

A suspect might have used a couple's wooden storage shed as a hideout spot while police were looking for him, according to a report.

Downers Grove police were in pursuit of the suspect on the 1500 block of Ogden Avenue at about 3:30 p.m. May 4, but could not find him. At 12:47 p.m. the next day, an officer responded to the 1500 block of Janet for a criminal damage to property report.

The owner's shed door was hanging from its hinges when she returned home from church. The owner had been outside shortly before the May 4 foot pursuit. Once several police entered the area during the pursuit, her boyfriend went out to close the dual shed doors and latched them shut, but without a lock, according to the police report.

"It appears the offender from (the pursuit) may have been hiding inside (the) shed," the report said. "He became trapped inside when the doors were latched and was unable to exit the shed. It is believed that the offender then forcibly pushed the doors open from the inside of the shed damaging the door and hinge."

Cannabis Possession

Piotr T. Smialkowski, 26, of the 500 block of Tiber Ridge Drive, Carol Stream, was charged with possession of cannabis following an 11:53 p.m. traffic stop on Glenview Avenue just north of Maple Avenue. Police pulled over Smialkowski's white 2003 Dodge Neon because a record check indicated that he had an expired driver's license for over a year, according to a police report.

An officer could smell a slight odor of burnt cannabis coming from the inside of the vehicle when he went to go talk to Smialkowski. Police found a cellophane package in the car with a substance that field-tested positive for cannabis. Smialkowski was handcuffed and taken to the Downers Grove Police Department for booking. He was also cited for no valid driver's license and no insurance, according to a police report. He was released on I-bond and will receive a court date in the mail.
