Thefts Prompt Reminder to Lock Vehicles

Downers Grove police caution residents following rash of weekend thefts unlocked cars.

A string of vehicle thefts during the overnight hours of Jan. 13 prompted Downers Grove police  to once again remind residents to keep their vehicles locked at all times and to bring valuables inside.

Sgt. Dave Bormann referenced a November 2010 alert issued to residents following a rash of similar thefts, and noted that this weekend's incidents also involved unlocked vehicles parked at nearby homes.

The following is a summary of the Jan. 13-14 thefts:

7:39 a.m.: A GPS, phone charger, five CDs and gloves valued at $240 were taken from two cars at a home in the 4800 block of Oakwood Avenue between 8:30 p.m. Jan. 13 and 6 a.m. Jan. 14.

8:40 a.m.: An iPhone charger valued at $15 and $5 in cash were taken from a car in the 4700 block of Forest Avenue between 11:30 p.m. Jan. 13 and 8 a.m. Jan. 14.

8:44 a.m.: A GPS valued at $200 was taken from a car in the 4900 block of Oakwood Avenue between 11:30 p.m. Jan. 13 and 7:45 a.m. Jan. 14.

10:34 a.m.: An iPod, iPod case and hat valued at $117.50 was taken from a car in the 4900 block of Oakwood Avenue between 11:15 p.m. Jan. 13 and 9:15 a.m. The owner found doors ajar on the car and the items missing from the center console and back seat.
