As Salt Dwindles, Downers Grove Modifies Snow Operations

The village of Downers Grove has modified its snow and ice control operations due to a regional salt shortage.

Due to the limited supply, the village will be applying salt only in targeted areas where it is most needed. An emergency supply of salt is maintained for use and application in the most extreme conditions.

The village will continue to closely monitor the situation and work with its supplier to replenish the salt supply.

Here's what to expect during snow and ice events:

  • Salt mixed with some sand will be applied to all Priority 1 roads (roads with the highest traffic volume including roads near schools and those leading to Good Samaritan Hospital), hills, curves and intersections.
  • Downtown parking lots/sidewalks and train station platforms will continue to be cleared and salted.
  • Neighborhood roads may be snow packed.

Your safety is the number one priority for the Village.  Please drive slowly, use caution and leave extra space between vehicles when driving in winter conditions.

You know what would SURPRISE me??? Actually PLOWING streets other than Fairmont, which is ALWAYS clear, yet surrounding streets are not. Wtf village??? Whomever is in charge of snow removal should be FIRED, because Park, Lyman, Randall, Benton, Blodgett is NEVER plowed. According to the plow schedule, these streets (With exception of Blodgett, which is on the red priority route yet NEVER plowed as such!) are secondary. How do you expect people to navigate safely if the secondary streets remain UNPLOWED, even 24 hours after snowfall has finished??? I'm really sick of this b.s.

Fairmount gets plowed because everyone uses it as a cut through to Maple, I've only lived on the street for 15 years. I wish it didn't get plowed because a lot of people drive like jerks Fairmount rules, Holla! #notreally

It's been a bad year for DG plowing operations.

The village should be sitting flush with all the new ugly monstrosities being built unfortunately they are putting the money in their pockets instead of village services. Hence the crappy response to the snow.
